The Growing Peril of Space Junk
Think of low Earth orbit as a massive, invisible highway. For decades, we've been launching satellites, rocket stages, and tools into this highway without a robust traffic management plan. Many of these objects, now defunct, have become space debris.
According to the European Space Agency, there are over 34,000 pieces of debris larger than 10 centimetres being tracked. These objects travel at incredible speeds, up to 28,000 kilometres per hour, where even a tiny fragment can strike an active satellite with catastrophic force. This growing cloud of junk poses a direct threat to the critical infrastructure we rely on daily—from GPS and weather forecasting to financial transactions and communication networks. The nightmare scenario, known as the Kessler Syndrome, is a chain reaction of collisions that could render certain orbits completely unusable for generations.
ISRO's Proactive Stance on Sustainability
Recognising this threat, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is moving decisively from awareness to action. At a recent gathering focused on mission operations, which brought together key figures from the space community, India reaffirmed its commitment to cleaning up its act. The nation has announced its intention to achieve debris-free space missions by 2030. This ambitious goal means ensuring that by the end of their life, all Indian spacecraft and rocket stages are safely de-orbited or moved to a less populated graveyard orbit. ISRO has already made significant strides, such as with the PSLV-C58 mission, where the final stage of the rocket was successfully de-orbited from an altitude of 650 km to 350 km to ensure it re-enters the atmosphere and burns up, leaving no debris behind. This isn't just theory; it's a practical demonstration of India’s commitment to responsible space activity.
The Pillars of India's Strategy
India's approach is multi-pronged. A key initiative is 'Project NETRA' (Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis), an early warning system to detect debris and other hazards to Indian satellites. This is part of a broader framework called IS4OM (ISRO System for Safe & Sustainable Space Operations Management), a holistic system for protecting India's space assets. In 2022 alone, ISRO performed 21 collision avoidance manoeuvres to protect its operational satellites. Furthermore, India is championing international cooperation and adheres to guidelines from bodies like the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC) and the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS). This strategy involves not just tracking existing debris but also innovating in areas like active debris removal and designing satellites for demise—ensuring they burn up completely upon re-entry.
Why It Matters for India and the World
For India, a leader in the global space economy, sustainability is a strategic and commercial imperative. The nation has a growing constellation of satellites for earth observation, communication, and navigation (NavIC), which are vital for its economic development and national security. Allowing orbital highways to become clogged with debris threatens these critical assets. By pioneering sustainable practices and technologies, India not only safeguards its own investments but also positions itself as a responsible leader in the global space community. With the Indian space sector now open to 100% foreign direct investment in certain areas, demonstrating a commitment to long-term sustainability makes it an even more attractive hub for international collaboration and private enterprise. This leadership is crucial as the world moves from voluntary guidelines to establishing concrete 'rules of the road' for space.
