What Just Happened?
India is now significantly closer to establishing its first homegrown, large-scale satellite network. In a pivotal development, the country's space regulator, IN-SPACe, has granted technical approval to a proposal from Reliance Jio to deploy a constellation
of approximately 1,600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. This 'technically sound' assessment, made in conjunction with ISRO and the Department of Telecommunications, is a critical milestone. It allows the government to officially back the push for international orbital slots, which are necessary to operate the network and marks a decisive step toward building a sovereign satellite broadband ecosystem.
A 'Made in India' Answer to Starlink
This development effectively sets the stage for a domestic challenge to international players like Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper. While global services plan to serve India from constellations controlled abroad, Jio's network would be India's own. This is crucial for data sovereignty and national security. The proposed constellation boasts a massive capacity of 4.5 to 5 terabits per second (Tbps), far exceeding the approved capacity for Starlink in India. This initiative aligns with the Indian Space Policy 2023, which aims to boost private sector participation and establish India as a major player in the estimated 2% of the global space market it currently holds.
How Will It Change Daily Life?
For the average person, a domestic satellite network promises a future with ubiquitous, high-speed internet. The primary goal is to bridge India's persistent connectivity gap, bringing reliable broadband to remote and underserved areas where terrestrial fibre and mobile towers can't reach. This includes challenging terrains in the Himalayas and remote islands. The network is designed to support not just fixed broadband but also cellular backhaul and direct-to-device mobile services. This could revolutionize everything from telemedicine and remote education to disaster management and in-flight connectivity, forming a key pillar of the Digital India initiative.
The Tech Behind the Network
The plan revolves around creating a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation, which involves a large number of satellites orbiting relatively close to the Earth's surface (around 1,500 km or less). This proximity reduces latency—the delay in data transmission—making the service feel as responsive as ground-based networks. To make this work, Jio plans to build a network of 20 to 22 ground stations across India to communicate with the satellites. While LEO constellations are the new frontier, India has also been strengthening its capabilities with traditional geostationary (GEO) satellites. ISRO's powerful GSAT-N2 satellite, launched in late 2024, is already enhancing broadband services from a fixed point high above the Earth. The new homegrown network represents the next logical step: a dynamic and powerful LEO system controlled from within India.
Strategic Importance and Next Steps
Beyond commercial use, a sovereign satellite network is a massive strategic asset. Officials have highlighted its value for national security and defence requirements, with early discussions exploring the possibility of hosting defence payloads on some satellites—a role a foreign-owned constellation could not fill. This reduces India's dependence on overseas companies for critical infrastructure. With technical approval secured, the next steps involve navigating the complex regulatory process of securing international orbital slots and spectrum through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). As these approvals fall into place and ground infrastructure is built, India moves closer to joining an elite club of nations with their own satellite internet ecosystems.
