A Vision for Statewide Connectivity
Madhya Pradesh is embarking on a significant aviation expansion aimed at bolstering its entire network, from major urban centers to remote towns. The state government, in coordination with the Centre, has laid out a multi-pronged strategy that includes
building new terminals, extending runways, and converting existing airstrips into fully functional airports. The plan is not just about isolated projects but a holistic overhaul designed to ensure no region is left behind. Major airports like Gwalior and Jabalpur have recently seen massive upgrades, while a new greenfield airport is planned for Shivpuri. Furthermore, the state aims to have an airport every 150 kilometers to enhance tourism and economic activities. This initiative is a clear signal of the state's intent to become a more integrated and accessible economic player.
Flagship Upgrades at Gwalior and Jabalpur
At the forefront of this transformation are the new terminal buildings at Gwalior's Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport and Jabalpur's Dumna Airport. The Gwalior terminal, built in a record 16 months, expands its peak-hour passenger capacity to 1,400 and incorporates sustainable features like a solar power plant. Similarly, the Jabalpur airport's new terminal, part of a larger INR 412-crore upgrade, can now handle 500 passengers during peak hours and features three aerobridges. The runway at Jabalpur has also been extended to accommodate larger Airbus A320 aircraft. These modern facilities are designed not only to manage increased traffic but also to reflect the local culture, with designs incorporating Gond paintings and other regional art forms. They serve as gateways to major tourist circuits, including national parks like Kanha and Bandhavgarh, and heritage sites.
The UDAN Scheme: Connecting Smaller Cities
A cornerstone of this strategy is the central government's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, which is pivotal in bringing air travel to smaller cities. The Centre has approved a plan to develop 10 existing airstrips in Madhya Pradesh into airports, with work beginning on five in the first phase: Singrauli, Sagar, Neemuch, Chhindwara, and Mandla. Singrauli, due to its remoteness, has been marked as a top priority. This regional connectivity push has already shown results with the inauguration of Rewa Airport, the state's sixth commercial airport, which now connects the Vindhya region to cities like Delhi and Bhopal. The development of airports in places like Ujjain is also being fast-tracked, particularly in anticipation of the Simhastha festival in 2028, which is expected to draw a massive influx of pilgrims.
Economic and Tourism Ripple Effects
This large-scale infrastructure upgrade is about more than just convenience; it's a strategic investment in the state's economic future. Improved air connectivity is expected to be a force multiplier for tourism, a key sector for Madhya Pradesh. Easier access to destinations like the Khajuraho temples, various tiger reserves, and religious centers like Ujjain can significantly boost visitor numbers and local economies. Furthermore, enhanced connectivity is crucial for attracting business investment and facilitating trade. For a landlocked state, efficient air cargo services are vital for transporting goods, including perishable items like fruits and vegetables, to national and international markets. Officials note that passenger traffic has already seen an uptick, indicating growing confidence and demand for air travel within the state.
