Myth 1: Creatine Is an Anabolic Steroid
This is perhaps the biggest and most persistent myth. The reality is that creatine and anabolic steroids are fundamentally different substances. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound made from amino acids, which your body produces and also gets from foods
like red meat and fish. Its job is to help your muscles produce energy for short, high-intensity movements. Anabolic steroids, on the other hand, are synthetic versions of the hormone testosterone and are classified as drugs. Creatine works on your energy system, not your endocrine (hormonal) system, making it a legal and safe dietary supplement, not a steroid.
Myth 2: Creatine Damages Your Kidneys and Liver
The concern for kidney health often comes from creatine's byproduct, creatinine. Supplementing with creatine can increase blood creatinine levels, which is a marker used to assess kidney function. However, in this context, the rise in creatinine is not a sign of kidney damage but simply a result of more creatine being processed; it does not mean the kidneys' filtering ability has declined. Decades of research, including long-term studies lasting up to five years, have consistently found that creatine supplementation does not harm kidney or liver function in healthy individuals when taken at recommended doses of 3-5 grams per day.
Myth 3: Creatine Causes Dehydration and Muscle Cramps
This myth is based on a misunderstanding of how creatine works. Creatine is osmotically active, meaning it draws water into your muscle cells. Rather than causing dehydration, this process actually increases intracellular water, hydrating the muscle. Far from causing cramps, scientific evidence suggests creatine has no link to cramping or dehydration and may even reduce their incidence during training. Studies have shown that creatine users often experience fewer cramps, instances of heat illness, and muscle strains compared to non-users, particularly when training in warm conditions.
Myth 4: Creatine Causes Hair Loss
The fear of creatine-induced hair loss can be traced back to a single, small study from 2009, which found that creatine supplementation increased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to male pattern baldness. However, that study did not actually measure or report any hair loss. Since then, multiple follow-up studies have not been able to replicate these findings or establish a direct link between creatine and hair loss. The current scientific consensus is that there is no strong evidence to support the claim that creatine causes baldness.
Myth 5: You Must Do a 'Loading Phase' for It to Work
A creatine “loading phase” involves taking a high dose (around 20 grams per day) for 5-7 days to saturate your muscles quickly. This is followed by a lower daily maintenance dose of 3-5 grams. While loading is effective at achieving muscle saturation faster—typically within a week—it is not necessary. You can achieve the exact same saturation levels by simply taking the standard maintenance dose from the beginning; it will just take a bit longer, usually around three to four weeks. The choice to load or not depends entirely on how quickly you want to experience the benefits.
Myth 6: Creatine Is Only for Male Bodybuilders
While popular in bodybuilding, the benefits of creatine extend to a wide range of individuals and activities. For women, creatine can improve strength, enhance recovery, and support lean muscle growth without causing excessive bulkiness. In fact, because women naturally have lower creatine stores than men, they may see significant benefits from supplementation. Its advantages are also seen in various sports requiring short bursts of power, and emerging research highlights its potential benefits for cognitive function and in older adults to help preserve muscle mass and strength.
Myth 7: All Creatine Supplements Are the Same
Walk into any supplement store, and you'll see various forms of creatine, such as creatine hydrochloride (HCl), creatine ethyl ester (CEE), and buffered creatine. These alternatives often claim superior absorption or fewer side effects, but the science doesn't consistently back this up. Creatine monohydrate is the most extensively studied form, with over a thousand studies supporting its safety and effectiveness. It has been proven to have excellent bioavailability and is the form used in the vast majority of studies showing positive results. For most people, creatine monohydrate remains the gold standard for its proven track record and lower cost.
