A Comprehensive Aviation Overhaul
At the core of this transformation is the Madhya Pradesh Civil Aviation Policy 2025, a strategic blueprint designed to make the state a major aviation hub. The government is pursuing a two-pronged strategy: significantly upgrading major airports like
Gwalior and Jabalpur, while also developing new airports by converting existing airstrips in smaller towns. The overarching goal is to establish an extensive network with an airport every 150 kilometres and an airstrip every 75 kilometres. This initiative is supported by financial incentives for airlines, including Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to make new routes economically sustainable. This funding helps airlines launch services to new destinations until they become profitable on their own.
Spotlight on Key Airport Upgrades
Several key airports have recently seen major upgrades. In Gwalior, a new state-of-the-art terminal building was inaugurated in March 2024 after being constructed in a record 16 months. This new facility is significantly larger and better equipped to handle a surge in passenger traffic. Similarly, Jabalpur's airport also unveiled a new terminal building in March 2024 and extended its runway, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A320. These upgrades are crucial for connecting the Mahakaushal region with major metros. Furthermore, a new greenfield airport is under development in Ujjain, with a target completion before the massive Simhastha festival in 2028.
Connecting Smaller Towns to the Grid
Perhaps the most significant aspect of the plan for regional connectivity is the development of airports in previously underserved areas under the central government's UDAN scheme. In October 2024, Rewa Airport was inaugurated, giving the entire Vindhya region its first major air link. Flights from Rewa now connect to major cities including Delhi, Bhopal, and Kolkata. Following this, the government has approved a plan to convert 10 more airstrips into fully functional airports. The first phase of this initiative includes developing airports in Singrauli, Sagar, Neemuch, Chhindwara, and Mandla, bringing air travel within reach for millions more people.
The Ripple Effect on Economy and Tourism
This aviation expansion is about more than just convenience; it's a calculated move to fuel economic growth. Enhanced connectivity is expected to provide a massive boost to tourism, making it easier for travellers to visit the state's numerous wildlife sanctuaries, such as Kanha and Bandhavgarh, as well as heritage and pilgrimage sites. New international routes, like the recently launched Indore-Abu Dhabi flight, are set to increase foreign tourism and business travel. Officials believe that improved air links will also stimulate trade, attract industrial investment, create local employment opportunities, and improve access to emergency services like air ambulances.
