Introducing a New Breed of Engineer
In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, a degree's name can sometimes be less revealing than its core philosophy. IIT Madras has recently launched a new B.Tech programme in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM) for admissions starting from
the academic year 2025-26. While the name is new, its significance lies in the underlying mission: to create a new generation of engineers who can seamlessly merge classical engineering with advanced computational tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning. Unlike a traditional computer science course focused purely on software, this programme is designed for future digital engineering careers where physical systems—like robots, cars, and smart infrastructure—converge with AI. The course will be offered by the institute's Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, with an initial intake of 40 students selected through the JEE (Advanced) examination.

It follows the immense success of its BS in Data Science and Applications, a pioneering online degree launched in 2020. That programme brought world-class education to thousands of students across the country through a flexible, web-enabled model with multiple exit options. Furthermore, for working professionals, the institute offers an M.Tech in Industrial Artificial Intelligence, often in partnership with corporate giants like TCS, to upskill the existing workforce. Together, these programmes show a clear, multi-pronged strategy: to equip students at every level—from undergraduates on campus to remote learners and seasoned professionals—with the practical AI skills needed to lead India's technological future.
