The Concrete Marathon: Viaducts and Piers
The backbone of the 508-kilometre corridor is the elevated viaduct, a continuous bridge-like structure that carries the tracks. As of late 2026, the progress has been immense, with construction of the viaduct completed over more than 359 kilometres. This
involves erecting thousands of piers, the massive pillars that support the structure. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the body executing the project, confirmed that pier work has been finished across more than 453 kilometres of the route. This relentless pace of civil construction, particularly in Gujarat, has set the stage for subsequent phases of track laying and electrification. The strategy to build an elevated corridor minimises land disruption and allows the high-speed line to pass seamlessly over existing roads and railway lines.
Conquering Rivers and Mountains
The project involves significant engineering challenges, including crossing 25 rivers and creeks. As of August 2026, 17 river bridges were already completed. In addition to rivers, the alignment cuts through hilly terrain in Maharashtra, requiring the construction of seven mountain tunnels. Work on these tunnels is advancing steadily, with some already achieving breakthroughs. A major highlight is India's first undersea rail tunnel, a 7-kilometre stretch beneath Thane Creek, which showcases some of the most complex engineering on the project. To ensure passenger comfort and reduce noise, these tunnels will feature 'tunnel hoods' for the first time in India, a technology that manages air pressure changes when the train enters and exits at high speed.
Stations of the Future Take Shape
The corridor will feature 12 stations, each designed to be a multi-modal hub. In Gujarat, stations like Surat and Ahmedabad are in advanced stages. At Ahmedabad, the structural work up to the track level is complete, with interior finishing and roof installation now underway. The Surat station, themed around the city's diamond industry, is also nearing completion and will house one of the project's rolling stock depots. In Mumbai, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station presents a different challenge, as it is being built nearly 30 metres underground. While work there is focused on deep excavation, stations in Thane, Virar, and Boisar are seeing rapid progress on their elevated structures.
Laying the High-Tech Track
With large sections of the viaduct ready, the focus is shifting to laying the specialised track. The project uses the Japanese Shinkansen-based 'J-Slab' ballastless track system, which is essential for high-speed stability and low maintenance. By late 2026, over 215 kilometres of the reinforced concrete (RC) track bed had been laid. Alongside this, over 9,000 masts for the Overhead Equipment (OHE) have been erected across 200 kilometres to support the 2x25 kV traction system that will power the trains. To minimise noise in residential areas, noise barriers have also been installed along nearly 300 kilometres of the alignment.
What to Expect from the 2027 Trials
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that trial runs are expected to begin by May or June 2027. These trials will not cover the entire 508 km corridor at once. Instead, they will be conducted on a completed section in Gujarat, with the Surat-Bilimora stretch being a prime candidate for the first operational service. The first body frame of an indigenous bullet train has already been completed and sent for squeeze testing to assess its structural strength. Following a testing period of two to four months, the first passenger service is anticipated to be launched in August 2027. This phased rollout will allow engineers to fine-tune operations under Indian conditions before the full corridor becomes operational, which is expected by 2029.
