A New Hub for AI Talent
Karnataka's Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, unveiled the ambitious plan on July 14, 2026, during the Google I/O Connect event in Bengaluru. The announcement marks a significant step towards creating a dedicated, state-backed institution focused entirely
on artificial intelligence. The proposed university aims to nurture world-class AI talent, promote advanced research, and strengthen the collaboration between academia, industry, and the government. Bengaluru, already India's undisputed technology capital, will be home to the main 100-acre campus, with regional campuses planned for Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, and Mysuru. This multi-campus approach is designed to spread the benefits of AI education across the state.
The Vision: An 'AI-Native State'
This initiative is the cornerstone of Karnataka's vision to become an 'AI-native state,' where technology is deeply integrated into governance and public services. The Chief Minister articulated a future where AI helps teachers teach better, doctors diagnose diseases earlier, and farmers receive improved advisory services. To support this vision, the university will be complemented by an AI Hub, designed as an incubation centre for startups and a research and development space for companies and academics. The government also plans to unveil a comprehensive 'Karnataka AI policy' aimed at attracting investment and building a globally competitive ecosystem for AI startups and innovation.
What Will the University Offer?
While specific curriculum details are still in development, the university is expected to offer a full spectrum of academic programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. The core focus will be on specialised fields that are driving the global AI revolution, such as machine learning, data science, robotics, and natural language processing. By creating this specialised institution, the government aims to address the rapidly growing demand for AI professionals, which industry reports project will more than double in the coming years. This move is also seen as a crucial step to formalise AI education and create a structured pipeline of high-quality talent, moving beyond the current reliance on self-driven learning and corporate upskilling programs.

The establishment of a government-led AI university is a strategic national asset. For years, India has been a global hub for STEM talent, but has faced challenges in retaining it. Initiatives like this university aim to provide world-class education and research opportunities at home, creating a robust domestic ecosystem. It builds on the central government's IndiaAI Mission, which has already allocated significant funding to expand compute capacity and support AI-focused academic programs. The Karnataka government has also been proactive, approving the establishment of 50 AI laboratories in government colleges to bring AI education to a wider audience. This new university represents the next logical step, moving from foundational labs to a centre of excellence dedicated to advanced learning and research.
