More Than Just a Conference
On September 17, global technology leaders, investors, and policymakers will gather at New Delhi's Yashobhoomi convention centre for SEMICON India 2026. The three-day event, themed “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem,” is India's premier platform
for the semiconductor industry. Prime Minister Modi's presence, including a planned roundtable with global CEOs, sends a powerful signal. It underscores the government's unwavering commitment to transforming India into a trusted hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and packaging. With over 500 exhibitors and delegations from more than 40 countries, this is not just an industry meet; it's a showcase of national ambition aimed squarely at the global investment community.
The Global Race for Chips
Semiconductors, or chips, are the brains behind every modern electronic device, from smartphones and cars to advanced defence systems. For decades, their production has been concentrated in a handful of East Asian countries. Recent geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions have exposed the vulnerability this creates, prompting nations worldwide to bolster their domestic chip-making capabilities. India is a major consumer of electronics, but has historically been heavily reliant on imports for the chips that power them. Establishing a domestic semiconductor ecosystem is therefore a matter of both economic strategy and national security, aligning perfectly with the government's broader vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' or a self-reliant India.
India's Billion-Dollar Strategy
To turn ambition into reality, the government launched the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with an initial outlay of ₹76,000 crore (approximately $10 billion). This programme provides significant financial incentives to companies willing to set up shop in India. The strategy is not just to build one or two factories, but to cultivate a complete ecosystem. This includes everything from the intricate design of chips and the complex fabrication process to assembly, testing, and packaging (ATMP/OSAT). Further underscoring this long-term vision, a second phase, Semicon 2.0, has already been approved to deepen support across the entire value chain, from raw materials and equipment to research and development.
From Plans to Production Lines
The mission is beginning to show tangible results. Twelve major projects have been approved under the first phase of the programme. Global giant Micron Technology began construction of its semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Gujarat, and major Indian conglomerates like Tata Group and CG Power have also entered the fray, partnering with international technology firms to build fabrication and assembly units. Government officials expect that by the end of 2026, five to six of these projects will have commenced commercial production, a critical proof point for India's credibility as a manufacturing destination. Initiatives are also underway to foster a talent pipeline, providing over 332 academic institutions with state-of-the-art design tools to train the next generation of engineers.
The Road Ahead is Steep
Despite the momentum, the path is fraught with challenges. Semiconductor fabrication plants are among the most expensive and complex manufacturing facilities in the world, requiring massive capital investment, an uninterrupted supply of ultra-pure water and power, and hyper-clean environments. India faces intense competition from established players and must address gaps in infrastructure and the supply chain for critical raw materials. Perhaps most importantly, while India has a strong base of chip designers, there is a recognized shortage of talent skilled in the hands-on, high-tech work of manufacturing, a gap the government and industry are working to close.
