A New Class of Train for the Common Person
First introduced in late 2023, the Amrit Bharat Express is designed to be a ‘no-frills’ superfast service for journeys longer than 800 kilometres. Unlike the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat trains, the Amrit Bharat focuses on providing an upgraded
experience for passengers in sleeper and unreserved general class coaches. The core idea is to offer a more comfortable, faster, and safer alternative for millions of everyday travellers without a significant price hike compared to older mail and express trains. This initiative is a key part of the national transporter's strategy to modernise its fleet while catering to the massive demand for affordable long-distance travel.
What Makes the Amrit Bharat Express Different?
The most noticeable feature of these saffron-grey trains is their use of 'push-pull' technology. Each train has a locomotive at both the front and the rear, allowing for much quicker acceleration and deceleration. This reduces travel time and improves operational efficiency. The LHB coaches are designed for a smoother, jerk-free ride at speeds up to 130 kmph. Inside, passengers will find better amenities, including cushioned seats, mobile charging points for every seat, improved bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, and CCTV cameras for enhanced security. Fully sealed gangways between coaches reduce noise and improve safety, making for a more pleasant journey overall.
The 7 Newly Approved Routes
The Railway Board's latest approval in August 2026 sanctions seven new weekly services that significantly enhance connectivity across four major regions of the country: northern, central, western, and southern India. The new routes are: 1. Dhanbad-Coimbatore: Connecting Jharkhand to Tamil Nadu, passing through key states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. 2. Charlapalli-Gorakhpur: Linking Telangana with Uttar Pradesh via Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and major cities like Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow. 3. Gorakhpur-Bandra Terminus (Mumbai): A crucial service connecting eastern UP with India's financial capital, running through Agra, Kota, and Surat. 4. Gorakhpur-Delhi: An additional weekly service to connect Gorakhpur with the national capital. 5. Prayagraj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): A train connecting the key city of Prayagraj with Mumbai via Madhya Pradesh. 6. Prayagraj-Udhna (Surat): This service links Prayagraj to the commercial hub of Udhna in Gujarat. 7. Subedarganj (Prayagraj)-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai): Another service from the Prayagraj region to Mumbai, ensuring better connectivity for passengers.
Boosting Regional Connectivity and Economic Links
This expansion is more than just adding new trains; it's about strengthening economic and social ties between diverse regions. The Dhanbad-Coimbatore route, for instance, provides a direct link between the coal belt of Jharkhand and the industrial hub of Tamil Nadu. Similarly, the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur service will benefit a vast number of migrant workers and students travelling between Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. The addition of multiple services from Gorakhpur and Prayagraj to major metros like Mumbai, Delhi, and Surat addresses long-standing demands on some of the country's densest travel corridors. Stoppages at smaller stations like Mancherial and Peddapalli in Telangana also bring modern train services to towns that were previously underserved.
