The Five-Hour Bridge to Ulaanbaatar
The biggest barrier to exploring Mongolia from India has always been the journey itself. Until now, reaching the capital, Ulaanbaatar, required long layovers in cities like Beijing, Hong Kong, or Incheon, often stretching the trip to between 13 and 18
hours. That has completely changed. Mongolian carrier Hunnu Air launched a direct, non-stop service between New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and Ulaanbaatar on September 28, 2026. This scheduled flight operates once a week, every Monday, and cuts the total travel time to an astonishing five hours. This game-changing route makes a week-long trip to the steppes not just possible, but practical, opening up a world of adventure without the exhausting travel days on either end. The service was first announced during a state visit in October 2025, and its launch strengthens the ties between the two nations.
Why Mongolia Should Be on Your Radar
Mongolia offers an experience that is a world away from typical tourist trails. It is one of the least densely populated countries on Earth, a place defined by its immense, untouched nature and deep-rooted nomadic culture. For travellers from India's bustling cities, the sheer scale of the silence and the endless horizons can be a profound experience. The country's appeal lies in its raw beauty: the sprawling Gobi Desert, the vast grassy steppes, and the dramatic Altai Mountains. It’s a destination for active, curious travellers who want to do more than just see sights. Here, you can ride horses across the plains where Genghis Khan's empire was born, sleep in a traditional felt tent (called a ger) under a blanket of stars, and witness ancient customs like eagle hunting. This isn’t a holiday for luxury resorts; it’s an immersion into a landscape and a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Unforgettable Mongolian Experiences
With the new flight making access easier, what should you do once you arrive? A classic Mongolian journey combines the capital with the countryside. Start in Ulaanbaatar, a city of stark contrasts where modern buildings rise next to Buddhist monasteries and Soviet-era blocks. From there, the real adventure begins. A trip to the Gobi Desert is a must for many, where you can climb the massive Khongoryn Els sand dunes, known as the 'Singing Sands', and see the Flaming Cliffs, where the world's first dinosaur eggs were discovered. Another essential experience is spending a night in a ger camp. This allows you to experience the famous nomadic hospitality firsthand, sharing meals and learning about a lifestyle dictated by the seasons. For those seeking even more adventure, trekking in places like Gorkhi-Terelj National Park or witnessing the horsemanship at a local Naadam festival (the main one is in July) are unforgettable highlights.
Planning Your Trip from India
So, how do you plan this adventure? The best time to visit Mongolia is during its short but pleasant summer, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the landscapes are green. May and September are also good shoulder months with fewer crowds. Winter is extremely cold and best avoided by most tourists. For Indian passport holders, the visa situation is quite straightforward. You must apply for a visa in advance, as there is no visa-on-arrival facility for tourists. This can be done conveniently through Mongolia's official e-visa portal. The tourist e-visa typically allows a stay of up to 30 days. You will need a passport with at least six months of validity, flight details, and proof of accommodation. While English is spoken by tour operators and in Ulaanbaatar's hotels, learning a few Mongolian phrases will be warmly received in the countryside.
