The lead-up to Diwali is filled with excitement and preparation. As you plan your outfits and decor, the desire for radiant, glowing skin is paramount. But in the rush to look your best, it's easy to fall into a common trap: overdoing it.
The Temptation of a 'Quick Glow'
With the festival
just around the corner, the pressure to achieve flawless skin can lead many to reach for powerful skincare ingredients known as 'actives'. We see promises of instant brightening and smoothness from products containing retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid, and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid. The thinking is simple: more power equals faster results. However, this approach can seriously backfire, leaving your skin looking worse just in time for the celebrations. Last-minute experiments with harsh facials, peels, or layering too many new products are common mistakes to avoid.
What Are Actives and How Do They Work?
Actives are the ingredients in your skincare products that are designed to target specific concerns by causing a biological change in the skin. For instance, retinoids and exfoliating acids like AHAs and BHAs work by accelerating skin cell turnover, which helps to shed dead cells and reveal the fresher, brighter skin underneath. Vitamin C is another popular active, prized for its antioxidant properties that protect the skin and help even out skin tone. When used correctly and with patience, these ingredients are incredibly effective. But their power is also their potential downfall when used too aggressively.
Signs You're Overdoing It
Instead of a festive glow, you might find yourself with a compromised skin barrier. This is your skin's protective outermost layer, and when it's damaged, it can no longer effectively hold moisture in and keep irritants out. The warning signs are hard to miss: redness that doesn't fade, a persistent stinging or burning sensation, and skin that feels tight, raw, or uncomfortable even after applying moisturiser. You might also notice unusual dryness, flaking, peeling, or even new breakouts in places you don't normally get them. Products that never bothered you before may suddenly cause irritation, a clear signal that your skin's defences are down.
Your Pre-Diwali Skin Rescue Plan
If you notice any of these signs, the first step is to simplify. It is often recommended to stop using all potent actives—including retinoids and exfoliating acids—at least five to seven days before a big event. This gives your skin time to calm down and repair itself. Strip your routine back to the essentials: a gentle, sulphatefree cleanser, a hydrating moisturiser, and a broadspectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Look for products with barriersupporting ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and niacinamide to help restore hydration and soothe inflammation.
