A Festive Twist to Your Coffee Run
This festive season, your regular coffee order comes with a side of authentic Bengali tradition. As part of its “Aamar Pujo, Aamar Starbucks” campaign, the coffeehouse chain has launched a limited-edition menu specifically for the Durga Puja celebrations
in West Bengal. This isn't just a simple rebranding of existing items; it's a full-fledged culinary nod to the region's rich gastronomic heritage, causing a stir of excitement and curiosity online and in stores across Kolkata. The menu features a lineup of savoury and sweet items designed to capture the essence of Pujo, a festival where food plays a central role in bringing communities together.
The Star Attractions: Kosha Mangsho and Bhetki Bhaja
Headlining the new offerings are two items that read like a Bengali food lover's dream: the Kosha Mangsho Roll and the Bhetki Bhaja Sandwich. For the uninitiated, Kosha Mangsho is an iconic, slow-cooked mutton curry, known for its rich, spicy, and deeply flavourful gravy. Starbucks has taken this beloved dish and reimagined it in a convenient, on-the-go roll format. Similarly, the Bhetki Bhaja Sandwich pays homage to another classic. Bhetki, or Barramundi, is a prized fish in Bengal, often enjoyed as a crispy, crumb-fried fillet. Translating this dish into a sandwich offers a contemporary twist, blending the familiar crunch and flavour with a format suited for a quick meal between pandal hopping.
A Full Bengali-Inspired Spread
Beyond the headline acts, the Pujo menu is impressively comprehensive. It includes a variety of other fusion creations, such as the Shorshe Chicken Burger, Aloo Posto Burger (inspired by the comforting potato and poppy seed dish), a Chingri (prawn) Turnover, and the returning Dhakai Chicken Wrap. On the sweeter side, the brand has drawn inspiration from legendary Bengali sweets, offering a Gurer Sandesh Flan and a Kalakand Pie. To complete the festive experience, the beverage menu has also been updated with drinks like the Saffron Latte and Choco Saffron Frappuccino, infusing the season's celebratory mood into every sip.
More Than Just a Menu
This move by Starbucks is more than just a clever marketing campaign; it's a significant example of a global brand localising its offerings to resonate deeply with regional culture. By embracing flavours as specific and cherished as kosha mangsho and aloo posto, the company acknowledges that in India, taste is local. This fusion of a global coffeehouse experience with hyper-local cuisine has sparked conversations about authenticity and innovation. According to Mitali Maheshwari, Head of Product and Marketing at TATA Starbucks, the initiative aims to make the brand an intrinsic part of the celebration, creating a space where customers can connect over familiar flavours presented in a new light.
Where to Find the Festive Flavours
This special Pujo menu is a limited-time offering, available at Starbucks stores across Kolkata. The menu was launched in late September and is expected to be available through the main Durga Puja festival days, ending around October 21st. While the primary focus is on Kolkata, where 13 stores are participating, some previous festive menus have also appeared in other eastern Indian cities, though availability for this specific menu is centred on the West Bengal capital. For those eager to try these unique fusion dishes, it's a chance to partake in a one-of-a-kind culinary experience that bridges the gap between traditional home cooking and global cafe culture.
