From Text to Talk: What’s New
Reddit has begun a limited experiment that automatically converts select text posts and their top comments into short video or audio files. On eligible posts, users will see a new option to either “Read” or “Play”. Choosing “Play” launches a vertical
video where AI-generated voices read the original post and a selection of replies. The text is highlighted on screen as it's spoken, similar to karaoke-style captions, and the videos are clearly labeled with a disclaimer: “Real conversation voiced by AI.” The original text-based post and the full comment section remain unchanged and fully accessible, ensuring the core functionality of the platform isn't lost.
The Strategy: Reclaiming Its Own Content
This move isn't happening in a vacuum. For years, creators on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have built massive followings by repurposing Reddit's content. They take compelling stories from subreddits like 'Am I the A**hole?' or 'Explain Like I'm Five', narrate them using text-to-speech software or their own voices, and pair the audio with unrelated background footage, such as video game clips. These 'Reddit story' videos generate huge viewership, but Reddit itself has not captured that engagement or revenue. CEO Steve Huffman explicitly referenced this trend during a recent earnings call, noting that a “listened-to or spoken Reddit can be really engaging.” This experiment is a direct attempt to bring that derivative content format back onto its own platform.
Rollout and Availability
The feature is currently in a very early and limited testing phase. It began rolling out on the web on August 17, 2026, with access on Reddit's iOS and Android apps following the next day. For now, the experiment is focused on select English-language posts within a sample of communities. Reddit has been manually curating the posts included in the test to better understand what kind of content works best in this new format. The company has not announced a timeline for a wider rollout, stating it first wants to see if users find the formats helpful and if the experience can feel authentic to Reddit’s community-driven identity.
A Push Toward Passive Consumption
This new feature represents a fundamental shift in how Reddit wants you to use its app. Historically, Reddit has been a platform for active engagement: reading, typing, and clicking. Audio and video formats introduce a more passive, lean-back experience. The company envisions people listening to Reddit threads while exercising, running errands, or cooking, much like they would a podcast. This pivot aligns with a broader industry trend toward short-form video and background audio, potentially increasing the time users spend on the platform. It could make Reddit more accessible and competitive against video-first rivals, but also risks diluting the text-centric nature that has defined it for years.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While innovative, the AI-powered feature has its hurdles. The AI narration can sometimes mispronounce usernames, slang, or community-specific jargon, which could break the sense of authenticity. Furthermore, Reddit is selecting which comments are included in the narrated version, meaning the video might not always reflect the highest-voted or most representative replies from the community. This curatorial power is a departure from the user-driven voting system that typically surfaces top content. The success of this experiment will depend on whether Reddit can scale the technology while maintaining the chaotic, human feel that makes its communities unique. Getting it right could unlock new audiences and engagement, but a misstep could alienate its loyal user base.
