Our Skin, Our Climate
Skincare is not one-size-fits-all, and the primary differences between Indian and Korean skin and environments explain why. Indian skin generally has a higher melanin content, which offers some natural sun protection but also makes it more prone to hyperpigmentation
and tanning. It also tends to have more active oil glands, which, when combined with India's hot, humid climate and high pollution levels, can lead to clogged pores and acne. In contrast, Korean skincare was formulated for a climate with cold, dry winters and milder summers, where deep hydration and heavy barrier creams are often necessary. What feels nourishing in Seoul can feel suffocating and pore-clogging in Mumbai.
Embrace the Philosophy, Not the Number
The true genius of K-beauty isn't the number of steps but its core philosophy: prevention over correction. This approach focuses on gentle, consistent care to maintain a healthy skin barrier, rather than using harsh treatments to fix problems after they appear. For Indian skin, this means embracing key principles like thorough cleansing, lightweight hydration, and diligent sun protection. The goal is to create a resilient, balanced complexion. A five-step routine that is tailored to your needs is far more effective than a ten-step one that isn't. You can even blend K-beauty's science-backed formulas with trusted traditional Indian ingredients for a routine that is uniquely yours.
Building a Climate-Smart Routine
So, how do you adapt? Start by simplifying. Double cleansing is a fantastic K-beauty habit to adopt, especially in polluted urban areas. An oil-based cleanser effectively dissolves sunscreen and grime, followed by a gentle, low-pH water-based cleanser to wash everything away without stripping the skin. Next, focus on hydration, but make it lightweight. Swap heavy creams for gel-based or water-based moisturisers that hydrate without adding excess oil. Look for watery toners and essences that absorb quickly. In extremely humid weather, you might find that a hydrating serum and a light moisturiser are all you need. The key is to layer thin, breathable products.
Ingredients That Make a Difference
Choosing the right ingredients is crucial for addressing common Indian skin concerns like pigmentation and oiliness. Niacinamide is a powerhouse ingredient that helps regulate sebum production, minimise pores, and tackle hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C is another hero for brightening skin and providing antioxidant protection. For calming redness and irritation, especially from heat and sun, look for products containing Centella Asiatica (Cica) or Green Tea. Hyaluronic acid is excellent for hydration, but opt for lightweight serum formulations. When it comes to exfoliation, be gentle. Over-exfoliating can trigger more pigmentation in melanin-rich skin, so limit chemical exfoliants to once or twice a week.
Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable
If you only adopt one step from any skincare routine, let it be sunscreen. For Indian skin, which is prone to tanning and pigmentation, daily, broad-spectrum sun protection is the most critical step for long-term skin health. India experiences high UV exposure year-round, which accelerates skin ageing and dark spots. Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas with at least SPF 30 that don't leave a white cast. Consistent use of sunscreen not only prevents future damage but also protects the progress you make with your other skincare products.
