Furthermore, charging speeds plummet as the battery management system works to protect the cells from damage that can occur when charging at frigid temperatures. Another major factor is cabin heating. Unlike a petrol car that uses waste heat from the engine, an EV must draw power directly from the main battery to keep its occupants warm, further draining its range.
A Trial by Ice
Audi's engineers are not just checking if the car will start at minus 20 degrees Celsius. They are validating a complex suite of interconnected systems. A key focus is the intelligent thermal management system, designed to keep the battery in its optimal temperature window. This involves preconditioning the battery while plugged in, using grid power instead of the car’s own range, and capturing waste heat from the electric motors to warm the battery pack while driving. They are also testing the consistency of DC fast-charging, aiming for repeatable and reliable charging times even when the battery is cold-soaked. The performance of the 800-volt architecture, a feature of Audi’s new Premium Platform Electric (PPE), is under scrutiny to see how it delivers on its promise of ultra-fast charging in less-than-ideal conditions.
