A New Badge of Exclusivity
In the world of premium automobiles, 'special editions' are a way for brands to celebrate heritage, introduce unique features, and offer a degree of exclusivity to discerning customers. The new Land Rover Discovery Landmark Edition is exactly that. It's
a cosmetically enhanced and feature-rich version designed to stand out from the standard models. According to recent announcements, the Landmark Edition will be positioned as a mid-level variant in the Discovery line-up. The key idea is to offer a unique package for buyers who want the capability of a Discovery but with distinctive styling touches that announce its special status on the road.
What Makes the Landmark Special?
The differentiation for the Landmark Edition is all in the details. Externally, it boasts an exclusive new Tasman Blue metallic paint option, a colour that pays homage to the Clearwater Blue of the original 1989 Discovery. It also features a Graphite Atlas finish for the grille, fender vents, and 'Discovery' lettering. Unique 'Landmark' branding with a mountain logo can be found on the B-pillars, tread plates, and even projected by the puddle lamps. Inside, the cabin receives brushed aluminium accents, faux suede trim on the dashboard, and a panoramic sunroof as part of the package. These elements combine to create a distinct and more luxurious ambience compared to its siblings.
Under the Bonnet
While the looks are new, the powerhouse under the bonnet remains a proven performer. For the Indian market, the Discovery range is powered by a single 3.0-litre diesel engine that produces an impressive 350hp and 700Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels, as one would expect from a Land Rover. The Landmark Edition will feature this same powertrain, ensuring it has the performance to match its rugged-yet-premium aesthetics. The package also includes Land Rover’s acclaimed Terrain Response 2 system, which equips the SUV with various driving modes for different terrains, and an impressive water-wading capacity of 900mm.
The Million-Rupee Question: Pricing and Position
This brings us to the central mystery: the price. While Jaguar Land Rover has not officially announced the figures, we can make an educated guess. The current Land Rover Discovery lineup in India ranges from approximately ₹1.25 crore to ₹1.39 crore (ex-showroom). Given that the Landmark Edition is positioned as a mid-level variant with a host of cosmetic upgrades, it is expected to slot in somewhere within this range, likely commanding a premium over the base 'S' model but sitting below the top-tier Tempest Edition. The final price will determine its competitiveness against formidable rivals in India's crowded luxury SUV space.
Navigating a Competitive Landscape
The Landmark Edition doesn't enter the market in a vacuum. It goes up against some of the most established names in the seven-seater luxury SUV segment. Key competitors include the formidable German trio of the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Audi Q7, along with the sophisticated Swedish offering, the Volvo XC90. Each of these rivals presents a strong case with its own blend of technology, comfort, and performance. By launching the Landmark Edition, JLR is making a strategic move to keep the Discovery appealing and fresh, attracting buyers who value both off-road legacy and on-road presence in a segment where distinctiveness is a major selling point.
