The GCC Blueprint for Success
To understand the excitement, we first need to look back. Starting in the late 1990s and exploding in the 2000s, Global Capability Centers (GCCs) transformed India’s economy. These were not just call centres; they were dedicated offshore hubs for multinational
corporations, handling everything from finance and R&D to high-end analytics. Initially drawn by cost savings, companies soon discovered India’s vast pool of skilled talent. GCCs evolved from back-office support units into strategic innovation hubs, developing global products and driving digital transformation from cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. By 2025, the sector grew to over 1,800 centres employing millions of high-value professionals, contributing massively to India's GDP and cementing its role as the world's technology back office.
India’s Data Centre Gold Rush
Now, a new boom is underway. As India’s digital economy explodes, so does the need for data centres—the physical brains of the internet. Driven by cloud adoption, the AI revolution, 5G rollout, and data localisation policies, investments are pouring in. India's data centre capacity is projected to nearly double from 853 MW in 2023 to 1,645 MW by the end of 2026, attracting investments worth billions. This expansion is expected to require 10 million square feet of real estate. Major global players are setting up hyperscale facilities, recognising India not just as a market to serve, but a strategic hub from which to manage global data infrastructure. In the first half of 2026, data centres even emerged as the top destination for private equity real estate investment, overtaking the office sector.
From Services to Critical Infrastructure
The parallel to the GCC story is compelling. Both movements are about leveraging India's strengths to serve global demand. But there's a key difference. The GCC wave was primarily about talent and services; the data centre boom is about capital-intensive physical and digital infrastructure. These are not just jobs; they are concrete assets, representing a 'stickier' form of investment. The opportunity extends beyond construction into a whole ecosystem of suppliers for power, cooling, and network connectivity. While GCCs put India on the map for IT services, the data centre wave could establish it as a global powerhouse for critical digital infrastructure, a foundational pillar of the 21st-century economy. This creates a new generation of roles, moving from software development to managing the very hardware the digital world runs on.
Navigating the Challenges Ahead
However, the path is not without obstacles. Data centres are incredibly power-hungry and thirsty, consuming vast amounts of electricity and water for cooling. In a country already facing energy and water stress, sustainable growth is a major concern. There are calls for clearer national policies on sustainability standards to guide this expansion responsibly. Another significant challenge is the shortage of a skilled workforce capable of designing, building, and operating these highly sophisticated facilities. Unlike the generalist IT skills of the GCC era, data centres require specialized expertise in areas like power management, advanced cooling technologies, and physical security. Addressing the talent gap and ensuring environmental sustainability will be crucial to fully realise this opportunity.
