The AI-Fueled Spending Spree
According to a new forecast released by Gartner on July 27, 2026, total worldwide IT spending is expected to jump by 14.2% in 2026 to reach $6.37 trillion. While this growth is impressive across the board, the IT services segment, projected at $1.57 trillion,
is a significant piece of the pie, showing a steady 5.3% growth. However, the real story lies in the engine driving this expansion: Artificial Intelligence. Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock calls the race to build AI-ready computing capacity "the largest infrastructure project ever attempted by humanity." This is causing an explosion in spending on data centre systems, which is forecast to surge by a massive 62.5% to $822 billion. Companies are aggressively investing in AI-optimised servers, cloud infrastructure, and AI-powered software to stay competitive.
What's Driving the Growth?
The spending isn't uniform. The biggest winners are the sectors that form the backbone of the new AI economy. Spending on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the cloud services offered by giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, is projected to climb 29.3% to $287 billion. Software spending is also set for a healthy 15.5% increase, nearing $1.47 trillion. This shift shows that companies are prioritising building and scaling their AI capabilities over everything else. Traditional areas like communications services (4.4% growth) and devices (9.8% growth) are seeing more moderate expansion. The message is clear: the future of IT spending is concentrated in infrastructure and intelligent applications, and companies are redirecting their budgets accordingly.
The India Opportunity
This global trend has significant implications for India's formidable IT sector. As a world leader in IT services, India is well-positioned to capture a substantial share of this growing market. A separate Gartner forecast focused on India projects the nation's IT spending to grow by 10.6% to over $176 billion in 2026, outpacing global peers. Bain & Company corroborates this, noting Indian enterprises are spending more on technology as a percentage of revenue than their global counterparts, driven by a need to modernise their systems and infuse AI. This domestic demand, coupled with a massive global market for services, creates a dual engine for growth. The continued expansion of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in India, leveraging the country's skilled and cost-effective workforce, is expected to further fuel the services sector's progress.
A New Demand for Skills
The boom doesn't just mean more of the same work. As spending pivots to AI and cloud, the skills in demand are also evolving. The emphasis is shifting from traditional IT support roles to high-value expertise in areas like AI and machine learning, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data science. Indian professionals with skills in AI-optimised infrastructure, cloud architecture (especially on platforms like AWS and Azure), and AI-enabled software development will be highly sought after. The challenge for India's talent pool is to adapt to this shift. While the opportunity is immense, seizing it will require a focus on upskilling and reskilling to meet the sophisticated demands of the AI-driven economy.
Navigating the Challenges
Despite the optimistic outlook, the path forward is not without its hurdles. Gartner analysts caution that technology budgets are still under pressure from inflation, supply chain constraints for crucial components like semiconductors, and rising hardware costs. For India specifically, challenges such as ensuring adequate power for data centres, navigating regulatory approvals, and addressing talent shortages in niche high-tech areas could act as bottlenecks. The global nature of the industry also means that geopolitical risks and economic slowdowns in key markets like the US remain a concern. Success will depend on navigating these complexities while continuing to innovate and deliver the high-value services the global market now demands.
