Mathematicians like Dr. Hannah Fry have brought this idea to the mainstream, showing how mathematical principles can illuminate everything from online dating to long-term commitment. The 37% Rule: When to Stop Searching
One of the most popular concepts is the “Optimal Stopping Problem,” often called the 37% Rule. This theory addresses a classic dilemma: how do you know when to stop looking and commit to the best option you've found? Applied to dating, the rule suggests you should spend the first 37% of your dating life (or a set dating period) exploring your options without committing. This initial phase is for calibration—getting a feel for the ‘market’ and understanding what you truly want in a partner. After you’ve passed that 37% mark, the strategy is to choose the very next person who comes along and is better than anyone you dated in that first phase. While not a guarantee, it mathematically maximises your chances of finding the best possible partner without endless searching and potential regret.
The Equation for a Lasting Marriage
Beyond finding a partner, mathematics is also being used to predict the longevity of relationships. Psychologist and researcher Dr. John Gottman, in collaboration with mathematicians, developed a model that can predict divorce with up to 94% accuracy. His team observed hundreds of couples discussing contentious topics and coded their interactions—both verbal and physiological. They discovered that the single best predictor of a stable marriage was the ratio of positive to negative interactions. Happy, lasting couples had a “magic ratio” of at least five positive interactions for every one negative interaction during a conflict. Behaviors like contempt were identified as particularly corrosive, what Gottman calls the “sulfuric acid of love.” This shows that it's not the absence of conflict but how couples navigate it that mathematically points to success.
Love as a Strategic Game
Game Theory, a branch of mathematics that studies strategic decision-making, also offers insights into relationships. Concepts like the Prisoner's Dilemma can be applied to romantic partnerships, illustrating why cooperation and trust often lead to better long-term outcomes than selfish decisions. This framework helps explain the delicate balance of give-and-take in a relationship. For example, research using game theory suggests that longer courtships, where both partners choose to wait and gather information, tend to result in more stable unions because it reduces the risk of mating with an unsuitable partner. It highlights that many of our interactions, even in love, involve a strategic component where we anticipate our partner's actions and react accordingly.

Despite its predictive power, experts are quick to clarify that math is not a crystal ball for love. These models are designed to identify tendencies and danger zones, not to dictate an unavoidable future. Human emotion is far too complex and unpredictable to be perfectly captured by equations.
