83,100 AI-related hires, compared to about 31,921 layoffs linked to the technology. That’s a ratio of roughly 2.6 new AI jobs for every role impacted by automation. This makes India 'ground zero' for understanding AI's real-world impact on employment, given its massive workforce and dominant IT and business process outsourcing sectors. The top-line number is encouraging, suggesting that the AI revolution, at least in its current phase, is one of expansion rather than contraction.
Unpacking the 'Mixed Picture'
However, the positive net number hides a crucial detail: the jobs being created are not the same as the ones being lost. The Nomura report highlights that most job losses are concentrated in roles with routine tasks, such as customer support teams being replaced by chatbots. At the same time, the new jobs are for IT-services graduates and experienced professionals with specific AI skills. This is creating a two-tiered labour market. An ICRIER survey noted that 55% of IT firms reported a decline in entry-level hiring, as the traditional 'hire-and-train' model for freshers becomes less viable when automation handles foundational tasks. The workers losing their jobs are rarely the ones getting hired for the new AI roles, creating a significant skills gap and a major challenge for the workforce. This is the friction point beneath the positive headlines.

Job postings in 2026 are increasingly specific, with data from Naukri showing AI-related skills now appear in nearly half of all white-collar job descriptions. More advanced, high-paying roles require experience in Large Language Model (LLM) fine-tuning and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). According to LinkedIn's CEO, AI engineering roles in India are growing at a staggering 51% year-on-year. However, it's not just about hard tech skills. As AI handles routine technical work, demand is rising for professionals who combine digital expertise with uniquely human skills like critical thinking, strategic planning, and business context.

The era of getting a degree and relying on that knowledge for a 30-year career is definitively over.
