Mumbai has officially entered the global workcation scene, becoming the only Indian city to feature in the 2026 Work from Anywhere Index by International Workplace Group (IWG). The city secured a score of 77, placing it ahead of major hubs like London
and Miami in a comprehensive evaluation of destinations that support professionals working remotely while travelling. The annual index, now in its fourth edition, was topped by Bangkok, with Tokyo and Barcelona also securing top spots. Mumbai's inclusion signals a significant milestone, reflecting the city's increasing appeal and India's maturing infrastructure for a flexible work culture.

A workcation is a trip where you travel to a new destination but continue your regular job remotely, rather than taking paid time off. Another significant factor was the widespread availability of co-working or flexible workspaces, a crucial element for remote professionals. The city's climate also contributed positively to its score. However, the report also highlighted areas for improvement. Mumbai lost points on its broadband speed and quality, the availability of local cultural events, and its overall happiness index score. Despite these drawbacks, the city's unique combination of being a financial powerhouse with a vibrant cultural life, from evening strolls at Marine Drive to exploring diverse culinary scenes, makes it a compelling choice.
India's Growing Remote Work Ecosystem
Mumbai's debut is part of a larger story about India's rapid growth in the flexible working sector. A separate 2025 report from Cushman & Wakefield highlighted that India achieved a perfect score of 100 on its flex workspace maturity index, placing it ahead of established markets like the UK and the US. As of mid-2025, India's top eight cities had nearly 80 million square feet of flexible office stock, a figure projected to cross 100 million square feet in 2026. This booming infrastructure is making cities across the country more attractive to digital nomads and remote workers. While Mumbai made the IWG list, other destinations like Bengaluru, Goa, Pune, and Jaipur are also popular choices for their unique blend of connectivity, affordability, and lifestyle appeal.
