decades, found that while both forms of exercise are beneficial on their own, pairing them together is linked to the lowest risk of death from any cause. Specifically, this combination was associated with a lower risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurological conditions. This reinforces what many fitness professionals have long advocated—that a well-rounded routine isn't about choosing one discipline over the other, but about integrating both. The research suggests that the two types of exercise offer complementary benefits that create a powerful synergy for long-term health.
Finding the 'Sweet Spot'
More is not always better, especially when it comes to strength training. The same massive study identified a potential 'sweet spot' for resistance exercise. The greatest benefits were seen in individuals who performed 90 to 119 minutes of strength training per week. Beyond the 120-minute mark, the additional survival benefits appeared to plateau. This is welcome news for those with limited time. You don't need to spend endless hours lifting weights to reap significant rewards. When this moderate amount of strength work was combined with regular aerobic activity, the health outcomes were even more profound. One group that combined 60-119 minutes of strength training with high levels of aerobic activity saw their risk of death drop by a staggering 45%.
Rethinking the 'Interference Effect'
For decades, many lifters have feared that cardiovascular exercise would “kill their gains.” This idea, known as the “interference effect,” originated from a 1980 study suggesting that combined training could blunt strength improvements. However, recent research provides crucial new context. A 2026 umbrella review of multiple meta-analyses concluded that concurrent training does not hinder strength or muscle growth (hypertrophy) compared to resistance training alone.
