From ‘What Did You Study?’ to ‘What Can You Do?’
This transformation is most visible in hiring practices. Companies are increasingly looking past the name of the university on a degree certificate. The World Economic Forum notes that around 30% of companies in India plan to adopt skills-based hiring, a significantly higher rate than the global average of 19%. This involves a move towards practical assessments, case studies, and problem-solving challenges during interviews. The emphasis is on demonstrating competency, not just credentials. This is partly a response to a persistent skills gap. Despite having one of the world's largest pools of young graduates, reports have consistently shown that a large percentage are not considered readily employable due to a mismatch between academic learning and industry needs. As a result, employers are taking matters into their own hands, focusing on identifying and verifying the exact skills they need, whether they were acquired through a formal degree, an online course, or on-the-job experience.
The Engine of Change: AI, Automation and Reskilling
AI and automation are the primary catalysts for this change. While these technologies are displacing some routine jobs, they are also creating millions of new roles in fields like data science, cybersecurity, and AI development. The World Economic Forum forecasts that demand for skills in AI and big data will be among the fastest-growing in the coming years. This creates an urgent need for continuous learning. It is estimated that a significant portion of India's workforce will require reskilling by 2030 to remain relevant. Recognizing this, both the government and private sector are scaling up initiatives. The government's Skill India Mission, now in its '4.0' phase, has trained millions and is increasingly focused on new-age digital and green skills. Simultaneously, a booming Ed-Tech sector provides countless opportunities for workers to acquire micro-credentials and certifications in high-demand areas, enabling them to adapt to the evolving job market.
How to Thrive in the New Skill-Centric World
For the individual professional, this new landscape can seem daunting, but it also offers unprecedented opportunities for growth and flexibility. The key is to adopt a mindset of lifelong learning. Rather than viewing education as a one-time event, it must be seen as a continuous process of upskilling (learning new, advanced skills) and reskilling (learning new skills for a different job). Building a 'T-shaped' profile is becoming crucial: developing deep expertise in one core area while cultivating a broad base of knowledge and soft skills across other domains. These transferable skills—such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and adaptability—are consistently ranked by employers as highly valuable, as they are difficult to automate.
