A Direct Connection At Last
The long-awaited direct, non-stop air link between India and Mongolia commenced on September 28, 2026. Operated by Mongolia's Hunnu Air, the service connects New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport with Ulaanbaatar. Previously, travelers had to endure
lengthy layovers in cities like Beijing, Incheon, or Hong Kong, turning the journey into a day-long ordeal. Now, the flight time is approximately five and a half hours. The service currently runs once a week, every Monday. The inaugural flight from Ulaanbaatar arrived in Delhi on a Monday morning, with the return flight departing later that afternoon, marking a new chapter in connectivity between the two nations.
More Than Just a Flight
This new route is the fulfillment of a diplomatic promise made during Mongolian President U. Khurelsukh's state visit to India in October 2025. It represents a significant step in strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries, often described as “spiritual neighbours” due to their shared Buddhist heritage. The connection is a key part of India's 'Act East' policy and aligns with Mongolia's 'Third Neighbour' policy, which seeks to build relationships beyond its immediate neighbours, Russia and China. This flight is not just about moving people; it's a bridge designed to deepen political, economic, and cultural ties that have existed for centuries.
What Awaits in the Land of the Blue Sky
For Indian travelers, Mongolia offers a unique adventure into a land of vast, unspoiled landscapes and nomadic culture. From the rolling steppes of Hustai National Park, home to the last true wild horses, to the dramatic dunes of the Gobi Desert, the scenery is breathtaking. The capital, Ulaanbaatar, offers a mix of modern development and rich history, with sites like the Gandantegchinlen Monastery and the towering Genghis Khan Statue Complex. The shared Buddhist connection makes pilgrimage to ancient temples and monasteries particularly meaningful for many visitors. This direct flight makes it easier than ever for Indians to explore the history of the Mongol Empire and experience the legendary hospitality of its nomadic people.
A Boost for Business and Trade
Beyond tourism, the direct air link is expected to provide a significant boost to bilateral trade and investment. The faster, more economical movement of people and cargo can unlock new opportunities. India is already a key partner in Mongolia's development, notably through a US$1.7 billion line of credit for the Mongol Oil Refinery Project, a flagship initiative for Mongolia's energy security. The new connectivity is poised to encourage further collaboration in sectors like mining, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, and information technology, strengthening the economic pillar of this strategic relationship.
The Practical Details
The Hunnu Air flight operates on Mondays, making a week-long trip a convenient option. For Indian passport holders, Mongolia offers an e-visa that can be processed quickly, and some reports have even mentioned visa-free arrangements for short tourist stays, though it is always best to confirm the latest policy with the embassy before travel. Ulaanbaatar is 2.5 hours ahead of Indian Standard Time. While Ulaanbaatar has modern facilities, those venturing into the countryside should be prepared for a more rustic experience, often staying in traditional gers (yurts) with nomadic families. This new flight route makes the logistics of planning such an adventure far simpler than ever before.
