Scheduled for September 17-19 in New Delhi, SEMICON India 2026 is set to be a landmark event in the nation's technological journey. Jointly organized by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the global industry association SEMI, the event is expected
to draw over 500 exhibitors and delegations from more than 40 countries. This gathering isn't just about showcasing products; it's a deliberate effort to accelerate India's evolution into a comprehensive, globally competitive semiconductor hub. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to inaugurate the event, the government's focus is clear: to move from ambition to execution, transforming India into a trusted partner in the global electronics value chain.
Fostering a 'Silicon to Systems' Mindset
The theme for this year's event, "Transform Tomorrow: Silicon to Systems – Building the Ecosystem," encapsulates a crucial strategic shift. For years, India has been a powerhouse in semiconductor design, with nearly 20% of the world's design workforce. However, the national strategy now extends far beyond this. The goal is to create an end-to-end ecosystem. This means nurturing homegrown intellectual property (IP) and chip design, establishing state-of-the-art manufacturing plants (fabs), building a robust assembly and testing industry, and developing the complex supply chains for materials and equipment that underpin the entire process. A key highlight will be the "Value Chain Experience," an immersive exhibition designed to showcase India's growing capabilities at every stage, from raw sand to finished electronic systems.
The Manufacturing Dream Takes Shape
The push for manufacturing is gaining significant ground. Under the government's Semicon India Programme, the country is already seeing tangible results. Several assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP/OSAT) facilities have already commenced commercial production in 2026. According to the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), India is on track to have five or six semiconductor projects in commercial production by the end of the year. These projects, including Micron Technology's major investment in Gujarat, are critical first steps. They demonstrate on-ground success and build the credibility needed to attract the massive, long-term investments required for advanced wafer fabrication.
Strengthening the Supply Chain Links
A chip is only as strong as the supply chain that creates it. The theme for SEMICON India 2026 also emphasizes building a "Trusted and Resilient" ecosystem, a direct response to global concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities that were exposed in recent years. By positioning itself as a reliable partner, India aims to attract companies looking to diversify their operations away from traditionally concentrated hubs. The conference will feature dedicated zones and discussions on the entire value chain, from raw materials and specialty chemicals to the sophisticated equipment needed for fabrication and testing. This focus is supported by the next phase of the government's plan, ISM 2.0, which aims to bolster domestic capabilities in equipment and materials manufacturing.
