A Story of Accelerated Growth
Mahindra's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune, recently celebrated a significant production milestone by rolling out its three-millionth vehicle. The landmark vehicle, a BE 6 electric SUV, symbolises the plant's evolution from
a traditional factory to a future-ready hub capable of producing both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles. What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is the accelerated pace of production. While the first million vehicles took 107 months to produce after the plant opened in December 2009, the most recent million were manufactured in just 27 months. This rapid scaling, nearly four times faster than its initial phase, reflects the soaring demand for Mahindra's portfolio and the operational excellence achieved at the facility.
The Heart of Manufacturing
Spread across a vast 657 acres, the Chakan plant is one of the jewels in Mahindra's industrial crown. Since its inauguration, it has been central to the company's strategy, designed to be a flexible and agile manufacturing centre. Today, the facility is a hive of activity, producing an impressive 19 different models and over 450 variants. This includes a wide array of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and the new generation of 'Born Electric' models. Its seven multi-model assembly lines allow for this incredible flexibility, enabling different products and configurations to move through the same complex, a crucial capability for a company with a diverse product range spanning SUVs, trucks, and multiple powertrain options.
A Hub of Technology and Innovation
The Chakan plant is a showcase of Industry 4.0 in action. The facility leverages artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity, and advanced robotics to create a highly efficient and connected manufacturing environment. An army of approximately 1,500 robots handles various tasks, contributing to a body shop that is over 98% automated. This high-tech approach extends to quality control, with systems like 3D component scanning, real-time weld monitoring, and 'No Fault Forward' gateways ensuring that vehicles meet the highest standards before progressing down the line. This fusion of technology allows Mahindra to deliver world-class quality at scale.
Commitment to Sustainability
Beyond its production numbers, the Chakan facility stands out for its commitment to responsible manufacturing. More than 50% of the plant's energy requirement is met through renewable sources, with the electric vehicle manufacturing operations running entirely on 100% renewable energy. The facility is also certified as 'Zero Waste to Landfill' and is a 'water-positive' operation, meaning it returns more water to nature than it consumes. These initiatives demonstrate a holistic approach to manufacturing, where industrial growth and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand, setting a benchmark for the industry in India.
Driving India's Global Ambitions
The Chakan plant is not just building cars for India; it is a critical hub for Mahindra's global aspirations. Vehicles manufactured at the facility are exported to numerous international markets, including South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, where the brand's SUVs and pickup trucks have gained significant traction. As R. Velusamy, President of Mahindra's Automotive Business, noted, the Chakan plant will remain at the heart of the company's manufacturing excellence as it continues to build world-class products in India for both domestic and global customers. The three-million-vehicle milestone, therefore, is not just a reflection of the past, but a launchpad for the future.
