The Delhi-Varanasi corridor, one of India’s busiest travel routes, is getting a significant upgrade. A new Vande Bharat Express is being introduced, but this isn't just another daytime chair car—it's a sleeper train poised to redefine overnight travel.
An Overnight Revolution
Indian Railways is launching its second Vande Bharat sleeper train on the high-demand New Delhi-Varanasi route, a move that promises to enhance comfort and convenience for millions of travellers. Unlike the two existing Vande Bharat services on this route, which are daytime chair-car trains, this new addition is an overnight service. This allows passengers to travel through the night, saving a valuable workday and reducing the rush on popular overnight trains like the Shiv Ganga Express. The service is highly anticipated, especially with its launch timed around the festive seasons of Diwali and Chhath Puja to manage the holiday rush. The train will connect the capital to the spiritual city via key stops at Kanpur and Prayagraj, covering the 759-kilometre distance in approximately eight hours.
What's the Schedule?
According to proposed schedules, the train is designed for maximum convenience. One proposed timing suggests the train will depart from Varanasi Cantt at 8:40 PM, reaching New Delhi at 4:50 AM the next morning. The return journey would see a departure from New Delhi at 11:25 PM, arriving in Varanasi at 7:35 AM. These timings are a strategic shift from earlier proposals, aiming to provide a comfortable overnight journey that concludes early in the morning. The train will consist of 16 coaches, including 11 AC 3-tier, four AC 2-tier, and one First AC coach, accommodating around 823 passengers.
Faster Journeys Ahead
The key promise of the Vande Bharat network is speed, and this new sleeper is no exception. While the existing chair car services on this route already complete the journey in about eight hours, the sleeper is expected to maintain this efficiency overnight. Initially, the train is expected to operate at a maximum speed of 130 kmph, which is a notable increase from the 110 kmph at which current trains often run on this section. Furthermore, Indian Railways is actively working on upgrading the Delhi-Varanasi corridor to support speeds of up to 160 kmph in the future, which could further shorten travel times. This positions the sleeper train not just as a comfortable alternative but as a progressively faster one.
A New Era of Comfort
The Vande Bharat sleeper is set to be a significant upgrade over existing long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani Express. Drawing inspiration from European train design, the sleeper variant will feature cushioned berths for enhanced comfort. The interior design focuses on passenger experience, with redesigned ladders for accessing upper berths, dedicated night lighting, and an integrated announcement system with visual displays. The coaches are also equipped with modern amenities like bio-vacuum toilets, automatic doors, CCTV cameras, and modular pantry units, ensuring a seamless and secure journey. This focus on a superior passenger experience is central to the Vande Bharat brand.
Impact on a Key Corridor
The introduction of an overnight sleeper on the Delhi-Varanasi route is more than just a new train—it's a strategic move to decongest one of the nation's most critical rail arteries. The route serves a massive flow of pilgrims, tourists, and business travellers. Currently, two Vande Bharat chair-car services operate on this line—one in the morning and another in the afternoon—but the demand for overnight travel has remained immense. This new sleeper service directly addresses that gap, offering a premium and time-saving option for those who prefer to travel at night. It represents a key step in Indian Railways' broader plan to introduce over 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trains, transforming long-distance rail travel across the country.
