The age of battling crowds at the usual tourist traps may be fading. A landmark report from digital travel platform Agoda signals a major shift, with a staggering 55% of Indian travellers planning to explore offbeat destinations in 2027.
Decoding the 55% Finding
According to Agoda's
'2027 Asia Travel Pulse' survey, which gathered insights from over 3,300 travellers across 11 Asian markets, Indian tourists are the most adventurous in the region. The headline figure reveals that 55% of Indian travellers are likely to visit a lesser-known, or 'offbeat', destination in the coming year. This is significantly higher than the Asian average of just 36%, positioning Indians as regional leaders in the quest for unique travel experiences. This trend isn't just a number; it represents a conscious move away from cookie-cutter holidays and towards more personal and meaningful journeys. Offbeat travel means deliberately choosing places that are less commercialised, avoiding the fatigue of overtourism, and seeking authentic cultural immersion away from the standard tourist trail.
The 'Why' Behind the Wanderlust
Several factors are fuelling this pivot to the path less travelled. The post-pandemic era has instilled a desire for more intentional and meaningful experiences. Travellers are actively seeking to avoid overcrowded hotspots, driven by a desire for peace, space, and genuine relaxation. For many, the goal is a deeper connection with the destination, engaging with local communities and discovering stories that guidebooks often miss. The motivations for Indian travellers are particularly distinct. Agoda's report highlights that 42% identify outdoor adventure as a key reason to travel, while a significant 14% are driven by spiritual and religious journeys—three and a half times the Asian average. This quest for purpose is reshaping the very definition of a holiday, from a simple break to an enriching life experience.
The New Map of Indian Travel
This trend is already visible in changing search patterns. Agoda's 2026 accommodation search data shows surging interest in destinations that offer these unique experiences. For example, searches for Pushkar, especially around the Holi festival, saw a 195% increase compared to the previous year. Similarly, Dharamshala and Leh recorded massive jumps of 154% and 143% respectively. These are not the traditional mainstream choices but are places rich in culture, spirituality, and natural beauty. This move also extends to exploring second-tier cities and hidden gems both within India, like in the Northeast, and in nearby international locations, pointing to a broader appetite for discovery.
More Than Just a Weekend Trip
The shift towards offbeat travel is also influencing how long people stay. Indian travellers are increasingly opting for longer trips that allow for deeper immersion. According to the survey, 26% of Indians plan for their trips to last between eight and 12 days, which is notably higher than the 15% average across Asia. This indicates a preference for slower, more thoughtful travel over quick, whirlwind tours. Longer stays enable travellers to move beyond a checklist of sights and truly absorb the local atmosphere, support local businesses more effectively, and create a more sustainable form of tourism that benefits communities beyond the major hubs.
Planning Your Own Offbeat Adventure
The rise of this trend doesn't mean you have to venture into the complete unknown without support. In fact, technology is playing a huge role. The same Agoda report found that 53% of Indian travellers now use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help plan their trips, from discovering destinations to building itineraries. This makes finding that perfect, uncrowded spot easier than ever. When planning, consider what drives you: is it adventure, culture, food, or relaxation? Start by researching regions known for these qualities rather than specific, famous cities. Look for homestays, eco-lodges, and boutique hotels that offer a local touch. Being open to flexibility and spontaneous detours is key to the offbeat mindset, allowing for the kind of unplanned moments that often become the most cherished memories.
