Indian Railways has unveiled a new way to experience one of the country's most picturesque landscapes. A special Vistadome coach now offers breathtaking views of the Western Ghats, promising a journey as beautiful as the destination itself.
A Window to the Western Ghats
The main attraction
is the Vistadome coach itself, an engineering marvel designed for sightseeing. These modern, European-style coaches feature massive panoramic windows and a transparent glass roof, offering passengers an almost unobstructed view of their surroundings. The seats are a highlight; plush and comfortable, they can rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to either face the direction of travel or turn to fully immerse yourself in the scenery passing by. Each coach is equipped with an infotainment system, Wi-Fi connectivity, and charging sockets for every passenger, ensuring comfort throughout the journey. With a limited capacity of around 44 seats, the experience feels exclusive and spacious. An observation lounge at the rear of the coach provides a unique vantage point for photographers and nature lovers to capture the receding landscape.
The Spectacular Route
While Vistadome coaches operate on several scenic routes, the journeys through the Western Ghats are particularly popular. One such recently launched service is on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, which traverses the stunning Sengottai-Punalur ghat section. This route is celebrated for its natural beauty, winding through dense forests, deep valleys, and numerous tunnels. Passengers are treated to views of landmarks like the historic 13-arch bridge and several waterfalls, including Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty. Similarly, the service between Yesvantpur (Bengaluru) and Mangaluru Junction is famous for its journey through the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya ghat section, a 45-km stretch renowned for its lush greenery, especially during and after the monsoon season. These routes transform the train ride from simple transit into a captivating travel experience.
Schedule and Service Details
The headline's mention of October 23 refers to the start of the return journey for the newly introduced Vistadome service on the Guruvayur-Madurai Express (Train No. 16328), marking the full operational launch of this roundtrip experience. The initial service from Madurai (Train No. 16327) began a day earlier on October 22. This trial service is scheduled to run on specific days of the week until mid-January 2027. The Madurai-Guruvayur service operates on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while the return journey from Guruvayur runs on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Other established Western Ghats Vistadome routes, like the one between Yesvantpur and Mangaluru, also operate on specific days, so it is crucial to check the schedule before planning your trip.
How to Book Your Scenic Ride
Booking a seat in a Vistadome coach is a straightforward process done through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. When searching for trains, you need to select 'AC Chair Car' or 'Executive Chair Car' as the class. On the booking page, the Vistadome coach is specifically listed with the code 'EV' or 'Executive Vistadome'. Fares are comparable to the Executive Class on Shatabdi Express trains and can vary based on the route. For example, a full journey on the Yesvantpur–Mangaluru route costs approximately ₹1,525, while the basic fare for the Madurai–Guruvayur service starts around ₹515. Due to the popularity of these coaches and the limited number of seats, demand is exceptionally high. It is highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance to secure a spot, especially during peak travel seasons and weekends.
