Finding the 'Sweet Spot' in Minutes
The study identified a powerful pattern for reducing mortality risk. The group with the lowest risk combined regular aerobic activity with a specific amount of strength training. The magic number for strength training appears to be between 90 and 120 minutes per week. Individuals in this range saw a 13% lower risk of dying from any cause compared to those who did no strength training. When this was combined with high levels of aerobic activity—meeting or exceeding the general recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate activity per week—the risk of death dropped by an impressive 45%. Why More Isn't Always Better
Interestingly, the study found a point of diminishing returns. While 90-120 minutes of weekly strength training was highly beneficial, doing more than 120 minutes did not provide additional reductions in overall mortality risk. This suggests a plateau effect, where the primary benefits are achieved within that one-and-a-half to two-hour window. This is encouraging news for those with limited time. You don't need to spend endless hours in the gym to reap significant rewards. The focus should be on consistency and hitting that effective dose, rather than maximizing volume at all costs.
