What Is the New Token System?
Indian Railways is introducing a token-based system for passengers booking Tatkal tickets at physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Instead of waiting for hours in a queue before the booking window opens, passengers can now collect a numbered
token during a specific time slot. This token determines their place in the queue, allowing them to wait nearby and approach the counter only when their number is called. The goal is to reduce the chaotic crowds that often gather, prevent disputes over queue positions, and streamline the entire booking experience. This change applies exclusively to offline counter bookings; the process for booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website or mobile app remains unchanged.
The Heightened Importance of Your Photo ID
Under this new framework, a valid, original government-issued photo ID is more critical than ever. It's no longer just a document to verify your identity during the journey; it's the key to securing your spot in the Tatkal queue. To get a token, you must present a valid photo ID, such as an Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence. The tokens are strictly non-transferable, meaning the ticket will only be issued to the person whose ID was presented to obtain the token. This measure is designed to clamp down on touts and unauthorised agents who often occupy queue spots to sell tickets at inflated prices. For some railway zones, this has been taken a step further with different categories of tokens.
Priority Categories and Family Bookings
To ensure genuine passengers get priority, some railway zones, like the West Central Railway, are implementing a two-category system for tokens. 'Category A' is for passengers booking tickets for themselves or their immediate family members. To get this priority token, you must show your own photo ID and, if booking for a family member, proof of that relationship may also be required. 'Category B' is for all other bookings. Category A token holders are served first, and only after they have completed their bookings will the counter serve Category B token holders. This gives a clear advantage to individuals and families travelling for personal reasons over agents or third-party bookers.
A Step-by-Step Guide to the New Process
Navigating the new system is straightforward if you know the timings. First, you must visit the railway reservation counter during the designated token distribution window, which is scheduled before the actual Tatkal booking begins. For AC classes, token distribution is generally between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, as AC Tatkal booking starts at 10:00 AM. For non-AC or Sleeper classes, tokens are issued between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM, ahead of the 11:00 AM booking start time. After collecting your token, you can wait for your number to be announced or displayed. Once your turn comes, you proceed to the counter with your filled reservation form, valid photo ID, and payment to complete the booking.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
Before heading to the station, ensure you have an original, valid government photo ID. Remember that the tokens are limited; initially, counters are expected to issue around 10 tokens for AC and 15 for non-AC classes, though this can change based on demand. If tickets remain after all token holders are served, they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis to walk-in passengers. Always have the correct details of all passengers ready on your reservation slip to make the process quick and smooth once you reach the counter. This new system is being implemented in a phased manner, starting with selected railway zones, so it's a good idea to check for specific announcements at your local station.
