A Global First for Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has officially started commercial production at its new fourth production line, known as Plant-D, at the Hansalpur facility. This addition increases the plant's annual capacity by 2.5 lakh units, taking it from 7.5 lakh to
a staggering 10 lakh, or one million, vehicles. The expansion makes the Hansalpur complex the single largest passenger vehicle manufacturing facility in India. More significantly, it is the first time in Suzuki Motor Corporation's global history that a single plant has achieved the capacity to produce one million cars annually. This milestone was achieved with an investment of approximately ₹3,900 crore for the new plant, bringing the total cumulative investment in the 640-acre Hansalpur facility to over ₹25,288 crore.
Powering the EV and Export Push
The new production line isn't just about increasing volume; it's about strategic direction. Plant-D will initially focus on manufacturing the company's flagship battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-Vitara. This move signals Maruti Suzuki's serious push into the electric vehicle space, easing previous capacity constraints that limited the model's availability primarily to export markets. The Hansalpur plant has already established itself as a critical export hub for the company. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, vehicles manufactured at this Gujarat facility accounted for nearly 47% of Maruti Suzuki's total overseas shipments. With the new capacity, the company is poised to strengthen its 'Make in India, Make for the World' strategy, meeting robust demand both at home and in over 100 international markets.
Gujarat: The Crown Jewel of Auto Manufacturing
This expansion solidifies Gujarat's position as the epicentre of Maruti Suzuki's, and arguably India's, automotive ambitions. The state's progressive industrial policies, excellent infrastructure, and port connectivity have created a thriving ecosystem for automakers. The Sanand-Hansalpur belt has become a magnet for the industry, attracting not just major manufacturers but also a vast network of ancillary and component suppliers. With this expansion, Maruti Suzuki's total production capacity in India has climbed to 2.9 million vehicles per year, with the Hansalpur plant now overtaking the Manesar facility as the company's largest production site.
The Road to Four Million
This million-unit plant is a crucial step in Maruti Suzuki's ambitious long-term plan to produce 4 million vehicles annually in India. The company is already planning further expansion in Gujarat with another massive greenfield manufacturing complex proposed for Sanand, which will also have a capacity of one million units per year. Together, these investments reflect a deep confidence in the Indian market, which has seen strong growth in passenger vehicle sales. The ripple effects of such an expansion are immense, promising significant job creation, boosting the local economy, and strengthening India's overall manufacturing capabilities.
