A Cosmic Photobomb
The image, or more accurately, a sequence of images, shows the larger of Mars's two moons, Phobos, passing in front of a distant Earth. From the perspective of NASA's Perseverance rover, perched on the rim of Jezero Crater, Earth appears as a single bright
pixel of light. In the sequence, our home planet drifts across the frame before being momentarily hidden, or 'occulted', by the dark, lumpy silhouette of Phobos. Justin Maki, an imaging scientist for the mission, called it a "unique Earth self-portrait, taken from the surface of another planet, with a Phobos photobomb." This marks the first time humanity has ever observed our planet disappearing behind another world from the surface of another planet.
The Eye on the Red Planet
Capturing this celestial event was a feat of precise engineering and planning. The images were taken by the rover's Mastcam-Z, a sophisticated pair of cameras mounted on its mast that act as its primary 'eyes'. These cameras can zoom in on distant features and capture high-resolution color images and video. While orbiters like the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and its powerful HiRISE camera have given us stunning high-resolution views of Phobos from above, this observation comes from the ground. The Mastcam-Z instrument had to be pointed at the exact right spot in the sky at the exact right time to catch two moving targets, one of which—Earth—was 314 million kilometers (about 195 million miles) away.
A Matter of Perfect Timing
So, what makes this perspective so rare? It’s all about the timing. Phobos is a strange moon; it orbits Mars incredibly closely and quickly, zipping across the Martian sky three times a day. From the surface, this means it rises in the west and sets in the east, completing a trip across the sky in just a few hours. Earth, meanwhile, is visible from Mars for months at a time, but it's just a faint 'star' among many. Getting these two objects to line up perfectly from the rover's point of view required careful calculation and a little bit of luck, according to Mark Lemmon, a co-investigator who planned the observation. The event, called an occultation, unfolded over just 40 seconds as the tiny dot of Earth vanished and then reappeared from behind the moon.
More Than Just a Pretty Picture
While some images from space are taken purely for their aesthetic and inspirational value, observations like this serve a scientific purpose. Primarily, it’s a powerful demonstration of the Mastcam-Z instrument's capabilities, proving it can track faint, moving astronomical targets. While this specific observation wasn't used for orbital mechanics, past observations of Phobos transiting the Sun have helped scientists refine their understanding of the moon's decaying orbit. Phobos is slowly spiraling closer to Mars and is expected to either crash into the planet or be torn apart into a ring in tens of millions of years. Every precise measurement of its path helps to model its ultimate fate. These images also provide data on the Martian atmosphere by observing how the light from distant objects like Earth is affected as it passes through it.
The Pale Blue Dot, Revisited
Ultimately, the power of this image lies in the perspective it offers. It joins a historic gallery of photographs showing Earth from space, most famously the 'Pale Blue Dot' image taken by Voyager 1. These views force us to confront the vastness of space and our own planet's place within it. Seeing Earth as a single, fragile pixel from the surface of another world is a humbling experience. It underscores not only the incredible distances involved in interplanetary exploration but also the unique and precious nature of our own world. As Jorge Hernández Bernal, part of a team that captured a similar view from the Mars Express orbiter, noted, images like this are a profound reminder that "we need to look after the pale blue dot, there is no planet B. "
