What Did the FSSAI Find?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an improvement notice to Andaz Delhi, operated by Juniper Hotels, after an inspection revealed multiple serious deficiencies. The findings were not minor oversights; they painted a picture
of systemic issues in the hotel's food handling and storage protocols. Inspectors discovered improper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, a critical lapse that poses a risk of cross-contamination. The notice also detailed poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene among food handlers, and improper food storage practices across the board. This action was part of a broader series of inspections in the Aerocity area, which also saw a similar notice issued to the nearby JW Marriott.
Expired Food and Pest Problems
Among the most alarming discoveries was a significant quantity of expired food. Officials found and discarded approximately 87 kilograms of expired sweets on the spot. The inspection also uncovered expired cake bases and bread packets, with some bread packaging allegedly having duplicate date markings applied to cover the original expiry dates. Furthermore, the FSSAI cited evidence of pest activity, a major red flag in any food establishment. Inspectors reported finding cockroaches near freezers, along with houseflies, mosquitoes, and spider webs in various kitchen areas, including the grinding room. One report even mentioned the discovery of a 'gutka' packet inside the hotel's bottling plant area, pointing to severe lapses in maintaining a sterile environment.
Understanding an FSSAI Improvement Notice
It's important to understand what this notice means. An improvement notice, issued under Section 32 of the FSS Act, is a formal communication from a designated officer who believes a food business operator has failed to comply with regulations. It is not an immediate shutdown order but a legally binding directive. The notice specifies the grounds for non-compliance and the corrective measures the establishment must take within a reasonable period, typically not less than 14 days. Failure to comply with an improvement notice can lead to more severe consequences, including the suspension or even cancellation of the establishment's FSSAI license. This process allows the business an opportunity to rectify its mistakes while ensuring public health is not compromised.
The Hotel's Response and Next Steps
In response to the findings, a spokesperson for Andaz Delhi stated that the health, safety, and hygiene of its guests are its highest priority. The hotel acknowledged the inspection, which reportedly took place on June 22, and confirmed it had cooperated fully with the authorities. They also stated that a detailed action-taken report had been submitted, and that the hotel continues to review and strengthen its food safety practices. The FSSAI has collected various food samples from the hotel—including ghee, mayonnaise, and coconut milk powder—for laboratory analysis. The final outcome and any further regulatory action will depend on the hotel's compliance with the corrective measures and the results of these lab tests.
A Wake-Up Call for the Hospitality Industry
The incident at a premium hotel like Andaz, which is among the properties listed to host visitors for the upcoming BRICS Summit, sends a powerful message to the entire hospitality industry. It underscores that brand reputation and luxury branding alone are not substitutes for rigorous, day-to-day adherence to food safety standards. The FSSAI's recent crackdown in major cities highlights a growing focus on enforcement, putting all food business operators on notice. For consumers, it serves as a critical reminder to remain aware and report any concerns. While regulatory bodies play a crucial role, an alert clientele is an essential part of the ecosystem that holds even the most high-end establishments accountable for the safety of the food they serve.
