Strawberry cultivation has traditionally been centered in cooler climes like Mahabaleshwar, which produces around 85% of India's crop. These regions provided the temperate conditions that conventional imported strawberry varieties, mostly from the US
and Europe, require. However, climate change is disrupting this delicate balance. Erratic rainfall, intense heatwaves, and shorter winters pose a significant threat. In Kashmir, for example, untimely rains have been reported to damage blossoms and reduce yields. For farmers, this means increased risk and unpredictability. For consumers, it threatens the availability and affordability of this popular fruit. This reliance on foreign plant material, not bred for India's diverse and warming conditions, has created a clear need for homegrown solutions.
The Science of Resilience
In response, Indian agricultural research institutions are leading the charge to develop indigenous, climate-resilient strawberry varieties. The goal is to breed plants that can thrive beyond the traditional hilly belts and withstand the nation's changing weather patterns. Scientists are focusing on key traits like heat tolerance, which allows strawberries to grow and fruit in the higher temperatures of the plains, and resistance to local pests and diseases that can flourish in warmer, more humid conditions. Techniques range from conventional cross-breeding to advanced methods like using gamma irradiation to induce favorable mutations, a project undertaken by Mahatma Phule Agricultural University and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The mission is clear: to create 'Atmanirbhar' strawberries that are perfectly suited for Indian farms.

While a wholly indigenous variety is still in development, several robust, heat-tolerant varieties are already enabling farmers to cultivate strawberries in non-traditional areas. Varieties like 'Winter Dawn' have proven to be consistent performers in the subtropical conditions of India's plains. Others, such as 'Sweet Sensation' and 'Florida Felicity', are also gaining popularity for their excellent flavour, high yields, and good shelf life under Indian conditions. Older varieties developed in India, like 'Pusa Early Dwarf,' are known for being suitable for the North Indian plains. These varieties are game-changers, allowing cultivation to expand into states like Punjab, Haryana, and even arid regions of Rajasthan with the help of modern farming techniques like drip irrigation and mulching.
What This Means for Indian Farmers
For farmers, the shift towards climate-ready strawberries is transformative. It significantly reduces the dependence on expensive imported saplings and the risks associated with planting varieties ill-suited to the local climate. By cultivating hardy varieties, farmers can achieve more stable and predictable yields, leading to better income security. Furthermore, it opens up new economic opportunities by making strawberry cultivation viable in regions previously considered unsuitable. Farmers in states like Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are now successfully growing this high-value crop, diversifying their income and tapping into strong local market demand.
