A recent report by financial services group Nomura has sent waves through the industry by quantifying the impact of artificial intelligence on India's job market. The findings show that AI-related hiring has significantly outpaced job losses. Specifically,
the country saw 83,100 AI-related hires compared to 31,921 instances of layoffs and attrition linked to the technology. This results in a net positive impact of over 51,000 jobs, challenging the widespread fear that AI would lead to massive unemployment. The report, which analyzed data and corporate announcements from 2022 through August 2026, identifies India as “ground zero” for assessing AI's global employment effects due to its large population and its role as the world's back office. The data suggests that for every job lost to AI, approximately 2.6 new ones are being created, a ratio that paints a picture of opportunity rather than obsolescence.
The New Roles AI Is Creating
The 83,100 new hires are not for legacy roles. They are for highly skilled positions that are becoming central to the modern economy. The surge in demand is for professionals like Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists, Generative AI Developers, and MLOps Engineers. These are the individuals building, implementing, and maintaining the AI systems that are transforming industries. According to LinkedIn's CEO, AI engineering roles in India are growing at a staggering 51% year-on-year. Companies are explicitly hiring IT services graduates and crediting the demand directly to AI projects. This hiring boom is concentrated in the technology sector, which accounts for over 90% of the new AI-related jobs created across Asia. The growth indicates a clear pivot in the Indian tech landscape, moving from traditional IT services to a more sophisticated, AI-driven ecosystem.
Understanding the Job Losses
While the net impact is positive, the 31,900 job losses represent real disruption for a significant portion of the workforce. The roles being eliminated are predominantly those involving routine, repetitive tasks that can be easily automated. According to the Nomura report, most of the firings are happening in support teams, which are being replaced by AI-powered chatbots, and in banking back-office operations and customer service roles. This automation is also affecting junior technical roles in areas like quality assurance testing and coding. The impact is not always seen in direct layoffs but also through slower recruitment and a decline in hiring for entry-level positions. One survey cited in the report found that 55% of IT firms reported a decrease in entry-level hiring as companies automate tasks previously handled by junior employees.
The Rise of a Two-Tier Labour Market
The concurrent creation of high-skill jobs and destruction of entry-level ones is leading to what economists call a two-tiered labour market. On one side, there is soaring demand and high salaries for experienced professionals who can develop and deploy AI solutions. On the other, demand is shrinking for entry-level workers, who traditionally used routine jobs as a stepping stone into the tech industry. This creates a significant challenge: the workers being displaced from support roles rarely have the skills to transition directly into high-end AI engineering positions. The report warns that while the aggregate numbers look good, they “mask distributional pain.” This structural shift puts a massive premium on upskilling and reskilling, as the skills that made someone employable yesterday may not be enough for tomorrow.
India's Path Forward: The Skills Imperative
The data makes it clear that India's ability to capitalize on the AI revolution depends entirely on its capacity to develop a skilled workforce. While India has a high AI skill penetration rate, there is still a massive talent gap. Reports indicate that a vast majority of Indian employers are struggling to find the talent they need, with AI skills being the hardest to find. The solution is not just about more graduates, but about the right kind of training. Employers are increasingly shifting to skills-first hiring, valuing practical experience with projects and internships over simple academic credentials. To sustain the positive momentum shown in the latest hiring data, a concerted effort from the government, corporations, and educational institutions is needed to build a robust pipeline of talent ready for the AI-driven economy.
