The NASA Study That Started It All
The popular belief that houseplants are tiny air-purifying machines can be traced back to a landmark 1989 report from NASA. Known as the Clean Air Study, its goal was to see if plants could help clean the air in sealed environments, like a space station.
Scientists were concerned about volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—chemicals like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene that are released from synthetic materials and can build up in enclosed spaces. The researchers, led by Dr. B.C. Wolverton, placed common houseplants like Snake Plants, Peace Lilies, and English Ivy into small, sealed chambers and injected these VOCs. The results were striking: after 24 hours, some plants had removed up to 90% of the pollutants from the chamber. The study concluded that plants could be a promising, natural way to combat indoor air pollution, and a list of top-performing plants was born.
A Lab Is Not a Living Room
The NASA study was scientifically sound for its purpose, but its findings have often been misinterpreted. The key issue is the difference between the study's conditions and a typical home or office. The research was conducted in small, airtight plexiglass cubes, which have no air circulation from the outside. In a real building, air is constantly being exchanged with the outdoors through windows, doors, vents, and even tiny cracks. This process, known as the air exchange rate, is already doing the heavy lifting of diluting and removing pollutants from your home. The NASA study didn't account for this crucial variable. The concentration of VOCs used in the experiments was also far higher than what you would typically find in a home. The plants were given a single high dose of pollutants in a sealed box, a scenario very different from the continuous, low-level emissions from furniture, paint, or cleaning products in a dynamic home environment.
What Modern Science Says
In recent years, scientists have re-examined the data to see how these plant-purifying abilities hold up in the real world. A pivotal 2019 review published by researchers at Drexel University analyzed decades of studies and did the math. They concluded that to achieve the same air-cleaning rate as a building's natural ventilation, you would need an astronomical number of plants—somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space. To put that in perspective, you might need to cram over 680 plants into a typical 1,500-square-foot home to make a meaningful difference. The consensus among environmental engineers today is that while plants do absorb VOCs, the rate at which they do so is far too slow to compete with basic ventilation. Opening a window or using an exhaust fan is thousands of times more effective at removing indoor pollutants.
So, Are Houseplants Useless?
Absolutely not. Just because they aren't the miracle air purifiers we once thought doesn't mean they don't offer significant benefits. The value of houseplants has simply shifted from chemistry to wellbeing. Numerous studies have shown that being around plants has profound psychological benefits. They can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve our perception of comfort and calm in a space. Tending to plants connects us with nature, which is a proven way to enhance mental health. Some research also indicates that the process of transpiration—where plants release water vapor—can slightly increase indoor humidity, which can be beneficial in dry environments. While some studies suggest soil microorganisms may also play a role in breaking down pollutants, the most powerful and proven reason to keep plants is simply because you enjoy them.
