Train journeys in India are getting a scenic upgrade. The Madurai-Guruvayur Express recently added a Vistadome coach, offering passengers a panoramic window into the lush beauty of the Western Ghats, especially along the famed Aryankavu Pass.
A Window Seat Like No Other
Imagine travelling
through misty hills and dense forests with an uninterrupted view of your surroundings. That is the experience offered by the new Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328). This specially designed carriage features large glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and seats that can rotate 180 degrees. With a capacity for around 44 passengers, the air-conditioned coach is built for sightseeing, allowing travellers to feel fully immersed in the spectacular landscapes of the Kollam-Sengottai railway line. This addition, a first for Kerala, aims to boost tourism by transforming the train journey itself into a prime attraction.
The Journey Through the Ghats
The most anticipated part of this route is the scenic section between Punalur in Kerala and Sengottai in Tamil Nadu. As the train traverses this historic mountain railway, passengers are treated to a visual feast. The line winds through the Shencottah Gap, a natural passage in the Western Ghats, revealing verdant valleys, dramatic curves, and thriving greenery. To handle the steep gradients in this ghat section, a banker engine is often attached to the rear of the train, adding another point of interest for railway enthusiasts. This stretch is where the Vistadome coach truly shines, providing a front-row seat to one of southern India’s most picturesque train journeys.
Spotlight on Aryankavu Pass
The area around Aryankavu is rich with natural and man-made wonders. As the train climbs through the pass, passengers can spot cascading waterfalls, particularly during the monsoon season, and dense forests that are home to diverse flora and fauna. The route features several tunnels carved through the mountains, including the historic Aryankavu-Puliyara tunnel, which marks the border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Emerging from the darkness of a tunnel into the bright green landscape is a highlight for many travellers. Nearby attractions that add to the region's charm include the Palaruvi waterfalls and the Thenmala Ecotourism Centre.
The Iconic '13 Arch Bridge'
A true marvel of engineering on this route is the 'Pathimoonu Kannara Palam', or the 13 Arch Bridge, located near Kazhuthurutty. This century_old viaduct, built by the British, stands on 13 massive granite pillars and stretches over 100 metres long. Surrounded by hillocks and the Kazhuthurutti River below, the sight of the train crossing this heritage structure is a photographer’s delight. Constructed with traditional materials like lime and jaggery paste, the bridge is a testament to the ingenuity of the old mountain railway and remains a major landmark. From the Vistadome coach, passengers get a sweeping view of this architectural gem and the valley it spans.
Planning Your Trip
The Vistadome coach service on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express was introduced on a trial basis from October 22, 2026, until mid–January 2027. On the Madurai to Guruvayur route (Train No. 16327), the coach runs on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For the return journey from Guruvayur to Madurai (Train No. 16328), it operates on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Tickets must be booked in advance and are available through official railway reservation channels under the 'EV' (Executive Vistadome) class. Given the immense popularity and any fact that seats were booked out for weeks in advance upon launch, planning ahead is essential.
