A Modern Train for the Masses
The Amrit Bharat Express is Indian Railways' answer to the demand for affordable, yet modern, long-distance travel. Positioned as a service for lower and middle-income passengers, these are non-air-conditioned trains designed to offer a superior experience
compared to conventional mail and express services. The key innovation is the 'push-pull' technology, which involves having a locomotive at both the front and rear of the train. This setup allows for significantly faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing travel time and enabling smoother, jerk-free journeys. Operating at speeds up to 130 km/h, these trains are intended to bridge the gap between basic travel and premium services like Vande Bharat.
Enhanced Passenger Comfort and Safety
Inside, the Amrit Bharat trains are a world away from older non-AC coaches. The 22-coach trains consist of general unreserved and sleeper-class coaches, all featuring improved amenities. Passengers can expect better-designed seats and berths, cushioned luggage racks, and individual mobile charging sockets for every passenger. The coaches also feature fully sealed gangways to reduce noise and dust, modern bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, and CCTV cameras for enhanced security. Radium illumination strips on the floor improve visibility at night, while an advanced passenger information system keeps travelers updated on the journey's progress.
The Gorakhpur-Mumbai Lifeline
A new weekly service, the Gorakhpur-Bandra Terminus Amrit Bharat Express (15085/15086), will establish a crucial direct link between eastern Uttar Pradesh and India's financial capital. The train is scheduled to depart from Gorakhpur on Fridays and from Bandra on Saturdays. This route is vital for the thousands of migrant workers and families who travel between these regions. The train will pass through major stations including Kanpur Central, Agra Fort, Kota, Ratlam, Vadodara, and Surat before reaching Bandra. The approval for this service in August 2026 marks a significant step in easing the heavy passenger load on this perennially busy corridor.
Connecting Purvanchal to the Capital
Another weekly service, the Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express (15095/15096), has been approved to improve connectivity with the national capital. The train will depart from Gorakhpur on Thursdays and make the return journey from Delhi on Fridays. This service will cover the distance in approximately 14 hours, offering a convenient overnight travel option. The train's route includes key stops at Basti, Gonda, Sitapur, Bareilly, Moradabad, and Ghaziabad, catering to passengers from several important towns in Uttar Pradesh. The service is a regularization of a former special train, now integrated into the Amrit Bharat network to offer a more reliable and comfortable option.
Impact and Future Rollout
The introduction of these two new services is part of a broader expansion of the Amrit Bharat network across India, with seven new routes approved in August 2026 alone. This initiative aims to modernize the railways and reduce congestion on high-demand routes without a significant price hike for the common traveler. While the timetables and train numbers for the Gorakhpur services have been announced, passengers are eagerly awaiting the official launch date, which the Railways is expected to confirm shortly. The arrival of the new orange-and-grey liveried rakes at Gorakhpur signals that the start of services is imminent, promising a new era of comfortable and efficient travel for millions.
