The Big Picture: A National Capacity Boost
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) recently greenlit three significant multi-tracking projects with a combined investment of over ₹10,700 crore. These projects will add approximately 656 kilometres of new lines across West Bengal, Jharkhand,
Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The primary goal is to de-congest some of the country's busiest railway corridors, which are crucial for transporting essential goods like coal, steel, and cement. By adding third and fourth lines to existing routes, Indian Railways aims to improve efficiency, run more trains, and increase the reliability of both passenger and freight services. This expansion is expected to directly improve connectivity for almost 4,800 villages, benefiting a population of around 5.6 million people.
Fueling the Industrial Heartland
The approved projects are strategically located to support India's industrial and mineral-rich regions in eastern and central India. One of the key projects is the construction of a fourth line along the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda and Katni-Pendra Road sections. Another is a third line between Bilaspur (Uslapur) and Pendra Road. These corridors are vital arteries for freight movement, linking industrial centres, mines, and ports. By increasing capacity, the railways can handle an additional 27 million tonnes of freight traffic annually, which will not only speed up supply chains but also lower logistics costs for businesses. This enhancement is crucial for ensuring the smooth flow of raw materials to industries and finished products to markets.
A Better Journey for Passengers
While the focus is heavily on freight, these upgrades will have a significant positive impact on passenger travel. Easing track congestion means passenger trains will face fewer delays, leading to more reliable schedules and potentially faster journey times. The expansion will improve access to major towns, cities, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities for people living in the 14 newly covered districts. Furthermore, the improved connectivity will make it easier for tourists and pilgrims to visit important destinations. Sites like the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, the temples at Amarkantak, and the Shri Kshetra Jagannath Temple near Jharsuguda are all expected to become more accessible.
Economic Growth and Job Creation
Large-scale infrastructure projects like this are powerful engines for economic growth. The construction phase itself is expected to generate significant direct and indirect employment opportunities for the local population. In the long term, better connectivity stimulates economic activity in smaller towns and rural areas by improving the movement of people and goods. By creating a more efficient transport network, the projects, planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aim to make regional industries more competitive and attract new investment into these states. This creates a positive cycle of development, leading to more jobs and prosperity.
Environmental and Long-Term Benefits
Shifting more freight from road to rail is a key part of India's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint. Railways are a much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport compared to trucks. The government estimates that these projects will help reduce oil consumption significantly and cut down on carbon dioxide emissions. By building a more robust and efficient rail network, India is not just investing in its economic future but also in its environmental sustainability, ensuring that development happens in a cleaner, more responsible way. These projects, slated for completion by 2029-30, are a foundational step toward a modernised railway system capable of meeting future demands.
