The technology briefly entered the public consciousness in 2022 when a Google engineer claimed it had become sentient, a claim widely dismissed by the scientific community but one that highlighted the model's convincing conversational abilities. While the LaMDA name is less prominent now, its technological DNA lives on within newer Google products like Gemini, forming the foundational knowledge for the company's evolving AI ecosystem.
The Fortress: Why Keep AI Internal?
The decision to keep a powerful AI like LaMDA primarily internal, rather than launching it as a standalone public competitor to ChatGPT, is rooted in a strategy of control and risk mitigation.
