From Reading to Watching
The new feature, currently in a limited experiment, introduces a 'Play' button on select posts. When tapped, it transforms the text-based discussion into a portrait-style video, similar in format to a TikTok or Instagram Reel. Using AI-generated voices,
the video narrates the original post and a curated selection of comments, while the corresponding text is highlighted on screen, karaoke-style. Each video is clearly labelled with the disclaimer, “Real conversation voiced by AI,” to maintain transparency. For now, the test is confined to a small number of manually selected, English-language posts, but it signals a major shift for a platform traditionally rooted in text.
Why Reddit is Reclaiming Its Voice
This move is both defensive and opportunistic. For years, a cottage industry has thrived on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, where creators scrape Reddit's most interesting threads, narrate them with robotic voices, and pair them with unrelated gameplay footage to rack up millions of views. This content, while popular, generates engagement and ad revenue that Reddit itself never sees. CEO Steve Huffman has openly acknowledged this trend, noting that a “spoken-Reddit” format could be highly engaging. By bringing this functionality in-house, Reddit aims to capture that audience, keep users on its own platform, and create new, lucrative inventory for video advertising.
The Business of Engagement
In today's social media landscape, video is king. Platforms live and die by their ability to hold user attention, and video is demonstrably more immersive than text. Reddit, which went public in March 2024, is under pressure to grow its user base and increase engagement metrics. The company has seen its daily active users grow to over 130 million, but to compete with video-first giants, it needs to evolve. This experiment is part of a broader push into video, which includes the recent introduction of video comments. Reddit is also framing the feature as an accessibility tool, allowing users to consume content while multitasking, like during a commute or workout.
A Calculated Risk
Despite the business logic, the move is not without risks. Reddit's user base is famously resistant to changes that might dilute the platform's unique, community-driven culture. The success of this feature will hinge on the quality of the AI. Early versions of AI narration can sound robotic or mispronounce slang and community-specific terms, which could alienate core users. Furthermore, Reddit is curating which comments are included in the videos, meaning the AI-generated summary may not always reflect the highest-voted or most representative replies in a thread. The original text threads remain untouched, allowing users to choose their preferred format, a crucial detail for retaining long-time Redditors.
