The 2026-27 Safari Season Is Here
Good news for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park has officially reopened for the 2026-27 tourist season as of October 3, 2026. After its annual closure for the monsoon, the park is once again welcoming visitors. The season typically runs until
the end of April 2027, when the next monsoon season begins. Jeep safaris in the popular Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges commenced from the opening day. Other zones are reopening in a phased manner. While jeep safaris are already operational, the much-loved elephant safaris are expected to resume by mid-to-late October 2026, once all ground preparations are complete. It is always advisable to check the official park notifications for the most current information before planning your travel.
Jeep Safari vs. Elephant Safari
Kaziranga offers two distinct safari experiences: by jeep and on elephant-back. A jeep safari allows you to cover a larger area of the park's diverse terrain, from grasslands to wetlands, increasing your chances of seeing a wide variety of animals like rhinos, elephants, and deer. They are ideal for exploring different zones and for photography, as the vehicle can stop for stable shots. In contrast, an elephant safari offers a unique, quieter experience. Riding on an elephant's back allows you to traverse through tall grasslands that jeeps cannot access, often leading to incredibly close encounters with wildlife, especially the one-horned rhino. These safaris are typically shorter, lasting about an hour, and are only available in the early morning. For a comprehensive experience, many visitors choose to do both.
Understanding the Safari Routes and Zones
The park is divided into four main safari zones, each with its own entry gate and unique character. Choosing the right zone depends on your interests, whether it's spotting rhinos, birdwatching, or seeking adventure. The four key ranges are the Central Range (Kohora), Western Range (Bagori), Eastern Range (Agaratoli), and the Burapahar Range. Each offers a different slice of Kaziranga's incredible biodiversity.
Central Range (Kohora): The Popular Choice
The Kohora or Central Range is the most popular and accessible zone, making it ideal for first-time visitors and families. Its landscape is a mix of open grasslands and water bodies, offering a high probability of spotting the famed 'Big Five': one-horned rhinos, wild elephants, Royal Bengal tigers, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. The entry gate is near the town of Kohora on the main highway, which also has the largest concentration of hotels and resorts. Both jeep and elephant safaris are available here.
Western Range (Bagori): Best for Rhino Sightings
If getting a classic, close-up photograph of a rhino is your top priority, the Bagori or Western Range is your best bet. This zone features vast stretches of grasslands and numerous water bodies, attracting large herbivores. It is widely considered the best area for rhino sightings and is also a favourite for elephant safaris that take you deep into the marshlands. The entry point is at Bagori, and it's another excellent zone for spotting wild buffalo, elephants, and swamp deer.
Eastern Range (Agaratoli): A Birdwatcher's Paradise
The Agaratoli Range, or Eastern Zone, is a haven for bird lovers. Its landscape is dominated by the Brahmaputra River and numerous wetlands, attracting thousands of migratory and resident birds. While you can still spot rhinos and other mammals, the main draw here is the rich avian diversity, including species like the Greater Adjutant Stork and various fishing eagles. This is the only zone that offers a boat safari, providing a different perspective of the park's ecosystem.
Burapahar Range: For the Adventurous
For those seeking a more rugged, off-the-beaten-path experience, the Burapahar Range is the perfect choice. Located at the westernmost end of the park, this zone features hilly terrain and dense forests. It is known for trekking opportunities and is a great place to spot primates like the Hoolock Gibbon, along with elephants and leopards. The wildlife sightings might be more challenging, but the scenic beauty and sense of adventure are unparalleled.
Safari Timings and Booking Tips
Jeep safaris generally run in two slots daily. The morning slot is typically from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM, and the afternoon slot is from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Elephant safaris are conducted only in the early morning, usually with two slots between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. It is highly recommended to book your safaris in advance, especially during the peak season from November to April. Bookings can often be made online through the official park website or authorized portals, as well as through your hotel or local tour operators.
