A New Adventurer on the Horizon
Spy shots captured in mid-July 2026 reveal a near-production prototype of what is widely believed to be the next-generation KTM 790 Adventure. The motorcycle boasts a significant visual overhaul, appearing slimmer and more modern than its predecessor.
Key changes include a new, compact projector LED headlight, sharper body panels, and a redesigned fuel tank. Notably, it seems to abandon the current model's distinctive low-slung 'saddlebag' fuel tanks in favor of a more traditional design. The test mule also features a long, single-piece seat, replacing the previous split-seat setup, hinting at a potential shift in ergonomics. Despite the comprehensive aesthetic changes, the fundamental architecture, including the frame and swingarm, appears to be carried over from the current platform.
The Proven Powerplant
At the core of this new machine is the trusted 799cc LC8c parallel-twin engine. This is the same compact, liquid-cooled unit that powered the original 790 Duke and Adventure, and it has a reputation for delivering a lively character and a broad spread of torque. When it first debuted, KTM engineers noted they chose a parallel-twin over their signature V-twin layout to create a more compact and agile package. The engine produces around 94-95 horsepower and 87 Nm of torque, a level of performance that remains highly competitive in the middleweight adventure segment. Its 435-degree firing order was specifically designed to mimic the sound and feel of a V-twin, giving it a unique personality. By retaining this engine, KTM is sticking with a known, reliable, and characterful performer that has been a cornerstone of its middleweight strategy for years.
A Strategy of Refinement
KTM's decision to refine the 790 platform rather than replace it entirely points to a clear market strategy. The 790 Adventure has had a unique history, being supplanted by the larger 890 Adventure before returning as a more value-focused option. This next-generation model seems poised to solidify its place in the lineup, likely positioned below the more powerful and off-road focused 990 Adventure, which has also been spotted in development. The new 790 prototype uses a 5-inch TFT display, similar to the current models, whereas the upcoming 990 is expected to feature a larger, more advanced vertical screen. This differentiation in tech, alongside displacement, suggests KTM is building a clearer tiered structure within its adventure range to cater to different riders and budgets. The spy shots also reveal new WP-branded brake calipers, indicating KTM is bringing more component manufacturing in-house.
What This Means for Riders
For adventure riding enthusiasts, the upcoming 790 Adventure represents an evolution of a popular formula. The move to a slimmer profile and more conventional tank design may appeal to riders who found the previous generation's styling polarizing. The bike is expected to retain its off-road credentials, with spy shots showing a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel setup, paired with WP Apex suspension. The familiar 799cc engine promises accessible and engaging power, suitable for both on-road touring and technical trails. It will likely come equipped with a modern electronics suite, including multiple ride modes, cornering ABS, and lean-sensitive traction control. While the prototype appears nearly finished, an official debut is not expected until the spring of 2027, aligning with KTM's recent trend of launching new models just before the main riding season begins.
