Why This Drive, Why Now?
With millions travelling home for festivals like Dussehra and Diwali, the railway network experiences immense pressure. To manage this rush and protect its revenue, railway zones like Central Railway conduct special drives. The primary goal is to curb
the misuse of reservation facilities, prevent the fraudulent use of concessions and passes, and check the authenticity of all tickets. These checks ensure that benefits meant for specific groups reach the right people and that reserved seats are occupied by legitimate ticket-holders, maintaining order and fairness during the busiest travel season of the year.
The Spotlight on Concessions and Passes
Indian Railways offers fare concessions to over 50 distinct categories of passengers, including senior citizens, students, patients, persons with disabilities, and recipients of certain awards. These concessions can range from 25% to 100% of the basic fare. However, these benefits are often misused, with individuals providing false information or using fake documents to avail of discounts. The current drive places special emphasis on verifying the eligibility of those travelling on such tickets, including Privilege Ticket Orders (PTO) and E-Passes used by railway employees and their families.
Your ID is Your Ticket's Best Friend
The core message for all passengers is simple: carry your original, physical identity proof. For those travelling on any concession or special quota, the ticket alone is not enough; you must present the original document that proves your eligibility, such as a government-issued age proof for a senior citizen discount or a valid student ID for a student concession. Digital copies or photocopies on your phone will likely not be accepted. If you're travelling in a group on a single ticket, at least one passenger must carry their original ID.
The Cost of Cutting Corners
Being caught without a valid ticket or the required original ID for a concessional ticket has serious consequences. Offenders are typically treated as travelling without a ticket. Under recently revised rules, this means you will have to pay the full fare for the journey plus a minimum penalty of ₹500, which has been increased from the previous ₹250. In cases of fraudulent use of concessions, such as providing a false age for a senior citizen ticket, the ticket is forfeited, and the full fare and penalty become due. For misuse of railway passes by employees, punishments can be severe, potentially impacting their service.
How to Ensure a Smooth Journey
A little preparation can save you from a lot of trouble. Before you start your journey, double-check that you have all the necessary documents. Ensure your ticket details match your ID. If using a concession, be absolutely sure you are eligible and have the original supporting documents. For those using a railway pass or PTO, make sure it has been properly exchanged for a travel authority before you board the train. These checks will also extend to unreserved tickets to verify their authenticity. By travelling with the correct and valid documents, you help ensure a smooth, hassle-free festive journey for yourself and everyone else.
