Hathni Kund: The Waterfall Trek
Arguably the most popular monsoon trek in Jaipur, Hathni Kund becomes a paradise when the rains arrive. Located about 17 kilometres from the city centre, the trail leads you through a lush valley to a stunning seasonal waterfall. The trek itself is considered
easy to moderate, typically starting from Charan Mandir near Nahargarh and taking about two to three hours for a round trip. The path winds through the forest, opening up to the majestic sight of water cascading down ancient rock formations into a pond, known as a 'kund'. The area also holds spiritual significance with a Shiva temple, Hathuneshwar Mahadev, located right beside the pond. For the best experience, visit between July and September when the waterfall is in its full glory.
Bhuteshwar Nath Mahadev: A Spiritual Hike
For those seeking a blend of adventure and spirituality, the trek to Bhuteshwar Nath Mahadev temple is an ideal choice. This trail, starting near Nahargarh Biological Park at Kheri Gate, is less crowded than other routes, offering a peaceful journey through the Aravalli forest. The round trip is approximately 7 kilometres and takes around four to five hours to complete. The path is a mix of forest trails and rocky sections with a gradual incline, making it a moderately difficult trek. During the monsoon, the route is exceptionally green, with streams crisscrossing the path. Your destination is a centuries-old Shiva temple nestled deep within the hills, providing a serene atmosphere away from the city's hustle.
Chulgiri Jain Temple: The Thousand-Step Climb
Combining panoramic views with a spiritual ascent, the Chulgiri trek is a unique experience. Located on the Jaipur-Agra highway, this trail leads to a beautiful Digambar Jain temple complex perched atop a hill. Trekkers have two options: a direct but steep climb up 1,000 stone steps or a more gradual 4-kilometre winding road. Both paths offer stunning views of the surrounding Aravalli landscape, which is especially verdant during the monsoon. At the summit, you are rewarded with a sense of tranquility and a bird's-eye view of the landscape. The centerpiece is a magnificent 21-foot-tall white marble statue of Lord Mahavira inside the temple, established in 1953.
Saan Valley Trek: An Offbeat Adventure
If you're looking for a path less travelled, the Saan Valley trek is one of Jaipur's best-kept secrets. Located near Kukas, this raw and untouched stretch of the Aravallis truly comes alive during the monsoon. The guided trek is about 4 kilometres long and takes you through meadows filled with butterflies and rocky trails, culminating at a summit with sweeping views of the Saan hills. An old Hanuman temple at the top adds a spiritual touch to the journey. This trail is perfect for nature photographers and adventurers wanting to see a wilder side of Jaipur's landscape, away from the usual tourist circuits.
Monsoon Trekking: Safety First
While the monsoon transforms the Aravallis into a lush paradise, it also brings challenges. Trails can become slippery and muddy, so wearing trekking shoes with a good grip is essential. It's always wise to carry a lightweight raincoat or poncho instead of an umbrella to keep your hands free. Avoid trekking alone on unfamiliar routes, especially after heavy rainfall, and always check the local weather forecast before you set out. Start your trek early in the day to avoid afternoon showers and to ensure you are back before dark. Finally, pack light but carry essentials like water, snacks, and a basic first-aid kit.
