The past year has seen a significant number of changes in international entry requirements, both making travel easier and adding new hurdles. Several popular destinations have embraced visa-free travel for Indians, while others have tightened their rules,
shifting from visa-on-arrival to mandatory pre-travel electronic visas (e-visas). These updates reflect a global trend towards digital processing and stricter immigration controls. For travellers, this means the old habit of assuming visa rules are static is no longer viable. Checking the latest regulations for your specific destination, passport type, and travel dates has become an essential step in planning any international journey.
Malaysia: Visa-Free Stays Extended
Good news for those dreaming of exploring Kuala Lumpur or Langkawi. Malaysia has extended its popular visa-free entry scheme for Indian nationals until December 31, 2026. This policy allows for stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business meetings, or social visits. However, this convenience comes with a key requirement: all travellers must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before arriving. While a visa isn't needed, immigration officials will still expect to see a passport with at least six months of validity, a confirmed return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation.
Thailand: A Return to 30-Day Visa Exemption
Thailand's visa policy has seen some back-and-forth, causing confusion for many. After a period of offering a 60-day visa exemption, the rules were revised. As of September 15, 2026, Indian passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for a period of up to 30 days for tourism purposes. This replaced the previous 60-day scheme. While the stay period has been reduced, the crucial point is that entry remains visa-free, avoiding the previously proposed reintroduction of a paid visa-on-arrival. All travellers must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before their trip.
Kenya: 'Visa-Free' with a Digital Catch
Kenya made headlines by declaring itself a "visa-free" country for all nationalities starting in 2024. However, this doesn't mean you can just show up with your passport. Instead of a traditional visa, all visitors, including those from India, must now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before their journey. The standard eTA costs around US$30 and is valid for a single entry and a stay of up to 90 days. The Kenyan government advises applying for the eTA at least three days before your travel date, though it can be done up to three months in advance.
Countries Tightening Their Rules
Not all changes have made travel easier. A handful of countries have moved away from more relaxed policies. In late 2025, Iran suspended its visa-waiver program for Indian passport holders, meaning travellers must now obtain a visa in advance. Similarly, countries like Bolivia, Cape Verde, and Nicaragua also ended their visa-on-arrival facilities for Indians in 2026, shifting to systems that require a visa or electronic approval before departure. These changes underscore the importance of verifying entry procedures, as arriving without the correct documentation can lead to denied entry.

Given how quickly rules can change, relying on past experience or outdated articles is risky. The most reliable way to confirm visa requirements is to consult official sources. Before booking any non-refundable flights or accommodation, visit the official embassy or consulate website of your destination country. These sites provide the most current and authoritative information. Additionally, check your airline's travel advisories, as they are often updated with the latest documentation requirements for boarding.
