The Promise of Persistent Growth
Forget overnight revolutions. According to a recent Goldman Sachs report, Generative AI (Gen-AI) is poised to become a steady, long-term engine for India's economy. The report projects that AI adoption could lift India’s annual labour productivity growth
by approximately 0.4 percentage points over the next decade. While that number may not sound dramatic, the key word is “persistent.” A consistent annual boost of this nature compounds over time, contributing significantly to economic expansion without the volatility of a boom-and-bust cycle. The forecast presents a range of possibilities, with the productivity gain potentially reaching as high as 0.8 percentage points if AI technology advances more rapidly than expected. This measured outlook suggests AI’s integration will be more of an evolution, building on India’s past successes with technology adoption, such as the IT services boom and the digital payments revolution.
Augment, Not Replace: The Future of Indian Jobs
The most pressing question surrounding AI has always been its impact on jobs. Here, the Goldman Sachs analysis offers a reassuring narrative, arguing that AI is far more likely to complement Indian workers than replace them. The report, titled "Gen-AI in India: Jobs Crosswinds, Productivity Tailwinds," estimates that while 9-17% of tasks in the non-agricultural workforce are exposed to automation, only 8-12% of actual jobs face a high risk of being substituted. In stark contrast, a much larger portion of the workforce—between 42% and 48%—is expected to have their roles augmented by AI. This means AI will act as a powerful assistant, automating repetitive and routine tasks. This frees up human workers to concentrate on higher-value activities that require critical thinking, complex problem-solving, client interaction, and strategic supervision. The focus, therefore, shifts from a fear of replacement to an opportunity for upskilling.
Which Sectors Stand to Win Big?
The impact of AI will not be uniform across the Indian economy. Knowledge-intensive sectors are best positioned to reap the benefits. Goldman Sachs identifies healthcare, education, financial services, and media as industries likely to see the most significant productivity improvements. In healthcare, AI can assist with diagnostics and data analysis; in education, it can enable personalised learning. The report also highlights Global Capability Centres (GCCs) as prime beneficiaries, where AI can enhance efficiency without large-scale job cuts. Conversely, industries heavily reliant on manual labour, such as manufacturing, construction, and textiles, are expected to see more modest gains, as these tasks remain difficult for current AI to automate. This creates a clear picture of an uneven transformation, where the biggest gains will be in sectors that trade in information and expertise.
The Billion-Dollar Bottleneck
India's journey to becoming an AI-powered economy is not without hurdles. The Goldman Sachs report clearly states that the biggest challenge isn't a lack of talent but a deficit in infrastructure. To fully capitalize on the AI opportunity, India requires massive investment in the foundational elements of the digital age. This includes building out data centres, ensuring a reliable power and water supply for these facilities, and securing affordable computing power. Currently, India accounts for only about 1% of global data-centre capacity, a stark figure that underscores the scale of the challenge ahead. Without robust and scalable infrastructure, the diffusion of AI across the economy will be slow and limited, preventing the country from realizing the productivity gains outlined in the report.
