An Ambitious New Cadence
Following the historic orbital success of its Vikram-1 rocket, Skyroot Aerospace is setting its sights on an industrial-scale operation. Co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana has stated the company's long-term goal is to achieve a launch cadence of one
rocket per month. This target represents a fundamental change in India's space capabilities, moving from a government-led model of bespoke, high-stakes launches to a private-sector-driven approach focused on frequency and commercial viability. Achieving twelve launches a year would transition Skyroot from a company that builds rockets to a company that runs a space-faring assembly line, serving the booming global market for small satellite deployment.
The Minds Behind the Mission
The ambition of Skyroot is deeply rooted in the experience of its founders, Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. Both are former scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), having worked on key projects like the GSLV rocket. In 2018, they left their secure government jobs to start Skyroot, betting on a future where private companies would play a crucial role in space. This was two years before India's space sector was officially opened to private participation in 2020. Their background gave them the technical expertise, while their entrepreneurial leap signaled a belief that India's engineering talent could compete on a global scale.
The Vikram Rocket Family
The workhorse for this ambition is the Vikram series of launch vehicles, named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India's space program. The company first proved its capabilities in November 2022 with the suborbital launch of Vikram-S. The real breakthrough came on July 18, 2026, with the successful orbital launch of Vikram-1 on its 'Aagaman' (Arrival) mission. This flight made India only the third country, after the US and China, with private orbital launch capability. The Vikram-1 is a four-stage rocket designed to carry payloads up to 350-480 kg into low Earth orbit, using carbon-composite structures and 3D-printed engines to keep costs down and manufacturing times short.
An Entire Ecosystem Taking Flight
Skyroot's rise is not happening in a vacuum. It is a flagship example of a broader policy shift in India. The establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in 2020 created a single-window agency to promote, authorize, and supervise private space activities. This body has been crucial, providing access to ISRO's test facilities and streamlining the authorization process, which Chandana praised for its efficiency. With over 450 space startups now registered in India, Skyroot is a leading player in a rapidly growing ecosystem that aims to capture a larger share of the global space economy.
The Challenges of the Final Frontier
Despite its recent success and clear ambition, the path ahead for Skyroot is not without its challenges. The primary task is to transition from a single historic flight to a proven track record of reliable and regular launches. This requires scaling up manufacturing, managing a complex supply chain of over 400 vendors, and consistently winning commercial contracts in a competitive global market. While the company has achieved a valuation of over $1.1 billion, becoming India's first space-tech unicorn, it must now demonstrate commercial success to justify that faith. The goal of a monthly launch cadence is as much a test of its business execution as its engineering prowess.
